Dras

Widely known as the coldest place in India, Dras is a magnificently barren mountainous terrain. Engulfed within sky-touching peaks, embellished by the snow in ruthless winters and highland pastures, this little town rests in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. Dras opens the gates to the magical kingdom of Ladakh. The city preserves an ornate memorial for the martyrs of the Kargil War. Hearing tales of the army guarding enemy lines will make your heart go out to them. Sonamarg to Dras is an odyssey brimming with ethereal surreality and cutting through Zoji La, though it is a tad bit tiring. It is a slow affair induced by the incredulous mighty mountainous passes that lure you away into a never-wanting-to-end vacation.

We finally reached Drass at around 1:30 PM, 3 hours from Sonamarg. Drass is slightly bigger than Sonamarg and has the distinction of being the second coldest inhabited place in the world, so getting clicked with the signboard was obvious.

Day 2: The Most Scenic Journey in the Country: Sonamarg to Leh via Drass, Kargil, and LamayaruToday's gonna be a day of epic proportions. We move to Leh via some memorable locations; Zozila pass, Drass, Kargil, Lamayuru all await before we reach Leh. We started off at sharp 8 am, & just before crossing Zozila pass there was a truck that had overturned on the road, causing a traffic jam. It took almost 40 mins for the army to clear the highway.

The world’s second coldest inhabited place in the world, awaits your embrace this October. The tourist season is long gone and the winter chill is just about to set in. Though Dras is not encouraged to be a tourist spot due to its close proximity with the border, it is one of the most beautiful panoramic villages that you will come across on the Srinagar-Leh highway. You can drive to Kargil for a day and further to Lamayuru or explore the local eateries within Dras, and interact with the locals. One of the top off-beat spots in our country, that you must visit during the off-season !The nearest airport is in Srinagar (SRX) and Leh (IXL), and you can also reach Dras by road (141 km from Srinagar).
