Lamayuru

Nestled in the western region of Ladakh, in the midst of barren mountains, Lamayuru is a culturally rich and enchanting village and an ideal pit stop on the Kargil-Leh route. The Lamayuru Monastery was built back in the 11th century and is now owned by the Red-Hat sect of Buddhism. A popular spot for tourists when in Ladakh, the revered monastery here is referred to as the Yung-Drung, which is home to more than 150 monks and houses some precious Buddhist artefacts, wall paintings, thangas, statues, carpets and an eye-popping 11-headed, 1000-eyed image of Chenzing. Also known as Moonland for its unique landscape resembling the moon's crater, Lamayuru is a must visit for its stunning beauty. There are popular treks leading to Lamayuru though they are slightly difficult for beginners, yet one can plan an exciting, adventurous holiday here.

That day was a free day for us and we decided to visit Alchi and Lamayuru (moon land) which was not a part of the packaged tour. The drive was very scenic till Lamayuru. Our first stop was Alchi Monastry. The location of the monastery is very serine it is on the bank of Indus River. We passed through small market which was selling statues of Indian idols and jewelleries. The monastery does not allow photography. We met one monk in the monastery who taught us the meaning of prayer flag “Om mani padme hum” and also how to rotate their hand prayer bells. After having coffee at the restaurant inside the monastery, we left for Lamayuru. Lamayuru is known as Moonland of leh because it resembles the moon surface. It is on the Leh-Sringar highway. We drove upto the Moonland Mountains which are all made of golden colour sand. We enjoyed the Moonland for an hour and then headed back to Leh.Day 9 – Back to Home“There are places you visit to know about them. You come back home, you know more about yourself.” Ladakh is definitely one of them. P.S. Often called the 'Moonland', because of its special moon-like landscape. Lamayuru is the oldest gompa in Ladakh. Both Lamayuru and Alchi are stunning in architecture, culture and natural beauty around. In simple words, not worth missing!

Lamayuru, 12:00 AM, 19th June 2018Due to intolerable cold weather we thought to take the adequate amount of liquid medicine to warm up our body. After this energetic session we got to meet some riders who all are travelling from kanyakumari towards leh. One of them has become friend of mine now. Here is his Instagram profile in case if you want to see his journey.Ajit Mishra : https://www.instagram.com/travellindia08:00 AM, 19TH JUNE 2018

After crossing Fotu-la we reached moonland, Lamayuru, known for its moon shaped landscape. Though we didn't stop here but the geological formations around sure made for a interesting view from our windows.
