After a specially hard semester at the university I`ve decided to spend my summer vacations in a different way, so I planned this backpack trip to Southeast Asia (summer vacation takes place from the end of December to the end of February in Brazil - where I'm from) . I did a little research and that were many many places that I wanted to see - but the time was short, so I had to organize my days there so I would get the best of it.
Because the time was an critical factor I`ve decided to take all my trips between places by airplane, which was surprisingly affordable, thanks to the low-cost companies operating in the area. All the flights (singapore-krabi / krabi-bangkok / bangkok-siem reap / sem reap-ho chi minh / ho chi minh-hanoi / hanoi-singapore) costed my about USD 200,00 - at the time.
Regarding accommodation, I stayed mostly in hostels, except for a 3-star-hotel in Hanoi, followed by some nights in a cruise. I was impressed by how clean the hostels were, as much as how well I was treated at them. Hostel prices vary from 15-30 USD/night, the most expensive was in Singapore, and the cheapest was in Siem Reap.
Singapore is one of the most incredible cities I've ever been to.Extremely organized and clean, with a beautiful architecture that ranges from ancient to futuristic. I took some days to explore the city within its different areas as Little India and chinatown, the financial district with its modern buildings, Sentosa island (where it's located the Universal Studios theme park) and Clarke Quay - where my hostel was.I specially recommend the Gardens by the bay, where you can see the Super Trees and the ultra modern Flower Dome and Cloud Forest.Singapore was the most expensive city in my itinerary, but it was definitely worth it.
I've stayed in Krabi for just one night, to get the ferry to the Phi Phi islands on the following day.It looked OK, my hostel was enjoyable and that was plenty of restaurants around.
The Phi Phi Islands were by far the most fascinating natural site I`ve been to. Beautiful beautiful landscapes, white-sand beaches, bluest water, really great.I`ve stayed in a hostel at Phi Phi Don, and it was a party hostel. The whole island turns into a giant club at night, and it gets wild. If you looking for some more peaceful trip, the island have resorts, where you can relax and just enjoy the view and the vibe of the island - at a price $$.
Bangkok was a great experience. The temples are stunning, as is the culture of the country.I`ve stayed in a hostel at the famous Khao San Rd, a really crowded street, full of backpackers from all around the world. At night the place turns into a party place, where all the stores put on music and you can buy buckets of drinks everywhere. Literally buckets.
In Siem Reap you can visit the Angkor Wat temple complex, the largest religious monument in the world - which is really worth the visit. You can purchase a single day pass or a 3-day-pass, depending on how you plan to spend your time there. There is lots of companies that offer a day trip to the temples, with a air-con van and water included. I really recommend these packages, because the weather is really hot.At night you can go to Pub Street, filled with backpackers from around the world. I would say it's a smaller version of Khao San Rd, in Bangkok.
Ho Chi Minh is the city of the motorcycles, you'll see thousands of them on every place you go.I visited the War remnants museum, and took a daytrip to the Mekong river delta. Great experience to see how the people of the country lives, and to understand their reality.
I`ve stayed only one night in Hanói, and then proceeded to a cruise through Halong Bay.The Halong Bay is one of the most beautiful places I've been to, and the cruise itself is a marvelous experience.
