This winter, travel to the Munroe Island, which is at the confluence of two rivers and has the most serene backwaters. The island still preserves its age-old heritage and culture; they even have the tools used during stone age. Munroe Island is named after its first resident, Colonel John Munroe. The island has some of the oldest architecture in the country, and buildings that once upon a time belonged to the Dutch. However, the Munroe Island faces a threat of submerging, so for us travellers the clock is ticking. How to reach Munroe Island:Munroe Island has its own railway station, and is well connected by both road and rail. The best way to reach Munroe Island is by taking a flight to Trivandrum and from there hiring a vehicle to the island, which is about 80km away.

The view of the gravelled trail from the Thangassery lighthouse towards the Kollam Port is probably the prettiest view you'll get of the city leading into the ocean. Kollam or Quilon has been thriving as a trading port since time immemorial. The colonial influences can be seen in the ruins and relics that dot Kollam extensively. The 13-arch bridge is one of India’s oldest mountain railways and still holds strong. The Thangassery church and fort are extensions of the lighthouse of which only remains are left. Kochupilamoodu has a model park on the beach and Thirumullavaram beach is ideal for a relaxing swim or a bath. What is most attractive about Kollam is the coconut trees lining the water, traditional villages and cashew plantations that surround the backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake. A cruise on the blue-green stretches of water is a major attraction for the views it provides. The Chinese fishing nets or 'Cheena Vala' against the sunset can be a magical sight that one may come across on the backwaters or the beaches.
