Thiksey is a quaint village located in the Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir. Blessed with unparalleled natural beauty, it makes for an ideal weekend getaway for backpackers. A favourite among locals, Thiksey is a popular campsite and terrain hiking destination. The view from the top of the mountain is stunning, with green pastures of alfalfa carpeting the mountain for as far as the eyes can see. Thiksey is also home to the ornate willow tree and a few rare birds.
One of the most famous monuments of this regions is the Thiksey Gompa, which is perhaps the largest and oldest monastery in the country. A fine example of Ladakhi architecture, this monastery is propped up on the hill in a layered manner unique to Tibetan engineering.The Gompa boasts of a 14m high statue of Lord Buddha, whose countenance is both serene and mysterious all at the same time. The morning prayer ceremony is one of the most sought after attractions here, with as many as 40 monks taking part in the ritual. The Chum dance of the region is a delightful sight to watch and has deep spiritual significance as well.
Flight bookings to Leh are available throughout the year and is perhaps the most convenient mode to reach Leh as well. The security at the Leh airport is quite strict and so one needs to be extra careful while travelling. Leh can also be reached by taking a bus from Jammu and Kashmir or Manali, or by taking a train from Pathankot or Chandigarh.
