One of the most popular destinations among hikers and backpackers is Leh and Ladakh. Guess what, here is another reason why you plan your next trip to this serene destination. Border Roads Organisation has a new motorable glaciated road, and now you can drive straight for 50km in Leh.
Border Roads Organisation which is responsible for development and maintenance of road networks on the Indian border areas has carved a motorable road out of glacier at approximately 17000 feet from sea level in Leh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
Where: The road has been constructed an altitude of over 17800 feet from Sasoma to Saser La.
Constructed under a project called Project Himank, this road will be the world's first glaciated road passing through the glacier regions in Eastern Ladakh.
Challenges:
The local news media reported that the officials claim that it will be a significant construction on shape-shifting glaciers and moraines. Along with these, limited time, troublesome weather and risk of avalanches and crevasses have made it difficult to construct the road.
A BRO representative told Greater Kashmir, "The temperature falls to -50 degree Celsius during winters, and in summers the temperature rises to 12 degree Celsius. As a result, there is limited time in hand for construction, and therefore, planning and preparations should be done four to five months in advance."
