'RAPIDX' is India's first semi-high-speed regional rail service, named by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). The high speed train will soon run from Delhi to Meerut in just 55 minutes and will be in operation by 2025.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) in India has named its first semi-high-speed regional rail services as ‘RAPIDX’.

The trains will be operating in the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors, in a way to connect keu urban nodes.

Interestingly, the name ‘RAPIDX’ has been chosen because it is easy to read and pronounce in various languages.

"In addition to signifying speed and progress, the X in the name denotes next generation technology and the new-age mobility solution. It also represents youth, optimism, and energy," NCRTC officials said.

A joint venture company of the Union government and states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, the NCRTC is tapping green energy by the installation of solar panels on stations and depots as well as the use of blended power in traction which is planned to be increased progressively.

"For the youth in NCR, RAPIDX will provide easier and faster access to a world of opportunities leading them towards their aspirations," it said.

India's first rapid rail features an aerodynamic profile. The long nose at the front of the train and plug-in doors reduce air drag at higher speeds. This is an automated train but the train operators will be overseeing the operations from the driver's cabin for safety reasons.

The frequency of the trains will be of five to 15 minutes making it very convenient for travellers with 14 stoppages during the commute from Delhi to Meerut.

The target to commission the train by NCRTC is the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor for the public by 2025.

"Before that, it will operationalise a 17-km long priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai in 2023, before its scheduled time," they added.
