Situated on the western side of the Pearl River estuary in southern China, Macau is one of the most prominent tourist places in China. Every year, lakhs and lakhs of visitors fly down to Macau to witness its splendour. There are plethora of things to do in Macau, from casinos, temples to museums and glitzy shopping malls; Macau has everything to keep its visitors engaged.
If get a chance, here are 20 things I would like to do when in Macau:
1. Traipse through Senado Square
That’s right! There is nothing like exploring a new city on your feet. And Senado Sqaure is one of
the most popular streets of Macau. The crescent consists of various shops, kiosks, heritage sites,
souvenir vendors and plenty of charm. If you are a photoholic, this place is just for you!
2. Relish Some Local Cuisine
Exploring a new culture is not complete without savouring its local delicacy. Macanese cuisine is
a whisk of southern Chinese and Portuguese cuisine. Often, you will see a blend of Southeast
Asian influence as well. Dishes such as Shrimp roe noodles, Dim-sum, Salt fish cakes to name a
few.
3. Try Some Adventure Sports at Macau Skyline
The view from Macau skyline is breathtakingly beautiful. And jumping off that outline is a
different experience altogether. From bungee jumping, skywalk to tower climb and ski jump,
Macau skyline adventure can be an achievement of the lifetime.
4. Visit Macau Lotus Flower Festival
Macau has a ritual to pay homage to the flower appear on their flag. Hence, every year they hold
a Macau Lotus Flower Festival which has already seen its 19 th edition. Thus, I would plan my
visit around June so that I can witness Macau in its full glory which is blooming with thousands
of lotuses
5. Tickle My Taste Bud at Taipa Village
Yes, some more food. Apart from relishing local delicacies in Macau, I would like to devote an
entire day at Taipa village to get a little more up close and personal with Macau’s food offerings
with Portuguese egg tarts, Pork buns and Chinese styled dried meat.
6. Laze on the Sands of Hac Sa Beach
Macau is beautiful – and what adds to that beauty is its largest natural beach. A little trivia here –
Hac Sa has been eroding from past few years now. In order to prevent it from disappearing,
Macanese government is filling the beach with some yellow sand.
7. Check Out Fisherman’Wharf
The name itself generates a lot of curiosity isn’t it? It is basically a theme park which is divided
into many sections, all following a different theme. Inside the park, there are shops, restaurants,
popular structures etc.
8. Stop Over at Seac Pai Van Park
Have you seen those giant Pandas? Aren’t they adorable? Macau is house to these cuddly fur
balls. And I have an hour to see these hilarious antiques.
9. Some Respite at Casa Do Mandarim (Mandarin’s House)
There is nothing like a free museum. Casa Do Mandarim was once owned by Qing dynasty
reformist and scholar, Zheng Guanying and his family, is a historical building which exhibits
history of Macau.
10. Hike up to Guia Hill
Did you know Guia Hill is one of the Macau’s Historic Centre of World-Heritage Sites? This fort
is an old military fort and also a conventional style light house. Inside the fort, you will see
various murals which showcase Macau’s connection to East and West Asian culture.
11. Enjoy mini Venice at Venetian Hotel and Casino
A mall inside a hotel! It’s is actually as glamorised as it sounds. Keeping the grandeur of the
Hotel aside, this place actually has a canal... a real canal – which offers a gondola rides.
12. Gamble in Some Extravagant Casino
When it comes to Casinos, Macau has myriad of options. And all of them are so flashy and
magnificent that gamble is not even the main attraction anymore. However, some of the popular
casinos to check out are Venetian Casino, Grand Lisboa, and Galaxy to name a few.
13. Explore the Cenotaphs
Every city has some gems hidden in its heart. Hence, when in a new city, it should be a must to
hunt the monuments. And Macau is home to more than 30 monuments.
14. Recce Through Old Chinese Temples
Macau has a dominant population of Buddhist. Hence, it has ancient Chinese temples which are
devoted to the Buddhist, Taoist etc. Some of the must visits amongst these are I Leng Temple,
Lin Fung Temple, Na Tcha.
15. Ruins of St. Pauls
This Jesuit church is beautiful not only in the day time, but is breathtaking in the dark as well.
Apart from the view, you can also explore its ruins and the museum.
16. Visit Lou Lim Lok Park
Just like the name, the place is equally ornate. The park has a pond, a graceful waterfall, beautiful plants and what not.
17. Dance in the Dancing Water
One of the world’s largest water extravaganzas is the dancing house in Macau. The place has world class equipment and technology, and some mind blowing acts.
Further please note: prices may vary for the category you are purchasing ticket for.
18. Tree of Prosperity
It is a treat to the eyes. It has golden twigs, which are painted with rays of light which switches colour to represent different season.
19. Performance Lake
As the name suggests, Performance Lake is basically a fire and water dance show which moves to the tune of popular Chinese melodies.
20. Drop Round to See House of Magic
Ever heard of illusionist, Franz Harary? If not then visit House of Magic and experience some electrifying magic by the man himself.
Just like me, if you are also excited just by reading this list, then plan your trip to Macau and explore the beauty of Macau.
