Cairns, in the state of Queensland, is the most popular gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, which beckons with turquoise waters and colourful marine life. A few highlights include a helicopter ride to the private island of Vlasoff Cay, which will give you a bird’s-eye view of the reef below and drop you off by a sandy inlet. Spend some hours snorkelling or sitting by the lapping waters to enjoy a leisurely picnic.

Snorkelling and diving expeditions to meet the Great Eight residents are a must, with opportunities to swim with clownfish at Lady Musgrave Island, spot giant clams at Clam Gardens, and marvel at manta rays at Lady Elliot Island. If you favour moonlit nights for your underwater adventures, night diving tours are available!

The Museum of Underwater Art, located off the coast of Townsville, promotes reef conservation with installations and sculptures. On land, visitors can enjoy a private picnic at any of Magnetic Island's bays, hike in Magnetic Island National Park, and encounter Australian wildlife at Billabong Sanctuary.

Australia has world-class surf spots for surfers of all levels and Bondi Beach in Sydney is a hot favourite with locals and tourists alike. For instance, the company Let's Go Surfing offers private or small group lessons for beginners to learn techniques, safety, and surfing etiquette. Similarly, Surfers Paradise in Gold Coast is ideal for beginners, with the company Go Ride A Wave conducting lessons in waist-deep water for added safety. Torquay, situated on the Great Ocean Road, a brief drive away from Melbourne, is another renowned surfing destination.

Australia's open roads provide an entertaining way to explore the country. Take the Great Ocean Road in Victoria to come across the 12 Apostles, soaring limestone pillars which were formed 10-20 million years ago!

Lighthouses and Cape Otway Lightstation dot the road on the New South Wales (NSW) Grand Pacific Drive, featuring the stunning Sea Cliff Bridge which provides gorgeous coastal views, Kiama's blowhole, Werri Beach, Hyams Beach, Bawley Point, and Pebbly Beach. The 281-kilometre stretch of Great Ocean Road between Melbourne and 12 Apostles, and the 140-kilometer Grand Pacific Drive are ideal for a day-long road trip or a couple of days with beautiful rainforests, national parks, beaches, and townships, which will compel you to make too many stops!

Winter Sports

Come winter (June-August), Mount Buller gets tucked under a veil of snow. Located only three hours from Melbourne, the country’s most accessible major snow resort spoils with myriad options. Dabble in skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or play in the snow. Coach tours are encouraged as driving on ice may get tricky.

Glamping

From luxurious treehouses to secluded beach stays, exploring Australia's natural beauty in style is made possible by glamping (glamorous camping). Paperbark Camp and Sanctuary by Sirromet are two of the many great glamping options. Paperbark Camp's canvas tents in Jervis Bay, NSW, are situated amidst eucalyptus and paperbark trees, while Sanctuary by Sirromet offers elegant tented pavilions in bushland just 30 minutes from Brisbane City and the airport, making it an ideal first or last stop before or after a long flight.

Australia is the place to go if one desires a legally permissible, over-the-top facade-climbing experience, and BridgeClimb Sydney, SkyPoint Climb, Brisbane's Story Bridge Adventure Climb, and RoofClimb Adelaide do not disappoint. Enjoy 360-degree views and expert insights on the engineering and cultural history of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Q1 Resort Building, and the Adelaide Oval. The latter affords best seats in the stadium and a bird’s-eye view of the game. The tours are entertaining and unforgettable as well as safe.
