Have you ever dreamed of diving into a giant garden of colourful corals and swim with some of the Earth's most exotic creatures? If you have, then you might want to visit the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
Known to be the largest and most spectacular coral reef ecosystem on Earth, it's also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and Australia.
But it was also in big trouble because human activities harmed its health and charm over the years. That's why UNESCO, a UN agency that watches over our planet's treasures, had put the reef on the danger list.
GBR IS NOW OUT OF DANGER, AT LEAST FOR NOW!
But now, there is some fantastic news! UNESCO has given the reef a thumbs up and taken it off the danger list, thanks to the actions and pledges of the Australian government. They have been doing their best to keep the reef happy and alive. Australia wanted to save the reef not only for its wonder and diversity but also for its economy.
However, this does not mean the reef is out of the woods yet. The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said they must do more to shield the reef from future risks. He also mentioned that the government will spend a lot of dough to do that, approximately A$1.2 billion. They will also report their progress to UNESCO by February 2024.
WHAT MAKES THE GREAT BARRIER REEF SO GREAT?
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s most significant coral reef system. It has 2900 individual reefs and 900 islands that stretch for miles and miles. It's home to many kinds of fish, corals, turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales, and other exotic sea animals. It is also a significant place for Indigenous Australians who deeply bond with it. It is an extraordinary place that deserves our love and care.
