How to commute locally? How to communicate?
Its a very small town, so everything can be managed by foot.
@ Tourist's points you can expect people responding in English, however if you are asking for directions then locals might respond in Flemish..so its better to use google maps.
Always advisable to use google maps; incase you need local sim, it can be purchased easily @ any local store (w/o any photo proofs etc like in India).You can go for Lyca sim.
What to see?
If time permits then on way to Bruges you can get down @ Ghent which is also famous for medieval architecture. Ghent is 45 mins by train from Brussels Central station & is en route Bruges.
