Second visit to Vietnam, this time with my girlfriend and I decided to do essentially a highlight reel of my last trip. Flying out of Bangalore via Bangkok, we reached HCMC early in the morning. Checking into the VBH Saigon, we had a quick shower and went out for some sightseeing. The weather was extremely uncomfortable (hot and humid) and therefore not as conducive to walking around like the last time.
We first visited the War Remnants museum, going through the same ritual of depression and anger and then proceeded to grab some coffee and find a place for a lunch of pho. Returning to the hostel and having another shower followed by a nap, we went out in the evening to Bui Vien Walking Street. Met up with a colleague who happened to be in town and then proceeded to visit a couple of pubs before grabbing dinner and retiring for the night.
Retracing my steps, we took an early morning flight to Hanoi reaching there around midday and checked into the VBH Downtown. The rain kept coming down in short bursts and so we grabbed a couple of ponchos and walked around the Old Quarters up to the lake, having lunch in same cafeteria that I had found last time and loved. Coming back to the hostel around evening, we sat around watching F1 and drinking till it was time to grab a couple of Banh Mis for dinner and sleeping early.
Got picked up by the shuttle to Oasis Party Cruise at Halong Bay early in the morning. We reached in time for lunch and went through the usual itinerary. To be honest, this was the weakest part of the trip as I soon realized that to have fun on a boat, you need to get along with the crowd you are stuck with. We didn't and so spent the evening getting drunk on the deck of the boat before heading back the next day.
We reached back in Hanoi late afternoon and were determined to make up for the anticlimactic time spent on the boat. Checked back into VBH Downtown after which we had an early dinner before spending a very fun night on the streets of the Old Quarter, including the area in and around VBH and Ta Hien Beer Street. The weather was slightly pleasant and so we were able to roam around and drink till the wee hours of the morning.
Flew to Danang the next afternoon and took a cab to Hoi An, where we checked into this charming seaside cottage called the Seaside Bungalow. They had a full litter of a few month-old pups which might have influenced our decision to stay with them. The hosts were also very helpful and charming and helped us out with any apprehensions regarding our travel to and from the ancient town. We booked a Grab which took us to the place and like last time I was swept away all over again by the beauty of the place. Walked around in the streets with the ubiquitous classical music and glorious lanterns. Had beers, a nice traditional dinner followed by partying at this hilariously named Tiger Tiger bar on the other side of the river.
Second day at Hoi An and we started the day late with a trip to the beach. Almost isolated, it was a clear day and we could see all way along the white strip to the Lady Buddha statue in Danang. Took a motorbike in the evening and went back to the Ancient Town late in the evening, followed by dropping the bike back at night and heading back in a cab to drink till late. The weather was much more inclement which meant very heavy periodic showers necessitating walking around in a poncho, which was its own kind of fun
Last day of the trip and we headed back to HCMC and checked into the Sheraton to wind down ahead of the travel back. We spent the day alternating between our suite, the pool and the spa and in the evening headed back to Bui Vien for one last drink.
Checked out the next afternoon and traveled back to Bangalore, again via Bangkok
