The Special Area Development Authority (SADA) has erected a tax collection barrier near Rohtang's Atal Tunnel in Sissu, Lahaul. Read further for details.
Why do tourists have to pay taxes?
Following the construction of the Atal Tunnel, the number of vehicles entering Lahaul has skyrocketed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 9.02 km long tunnel connecting Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti valley last October. So in order to maintain the roads, and avoid over-tourism, the authorities have come up with this new regime.
How much do the tourists have to pay as taxes?
Two-wheelers will be charged Rs 50, while cars will be asked to pay Rs 200, SUVs and MUVs will be charged Rs 300, while buses and trucks will be charged Rs 500 to pass the tunnel.
Vehicles entering Lahaul regularly, on the other hand, will not be required to pay tax and will be required to apply for an exemption.
Why these taxes are worth it for the tourists?
