Hospet is a chaotic and busy city in the Bellary district of Karnataka and is mainly known for its close proximity to Hampi. Numerous monuments and temples throw light on this ancient city’s past. According to legends, this town was built by a Vijayanagara ruler, Krishna Deva Raya, in memory of his mother, Nagambalika. Being situated on the banks of Tungabhadra river, it is the site for the magnificent Tungabhadra Dam. With gardens, fountains, lights and sounds, the dam resembles a Japanese-style park. You can avail a bus service that will take you up the hilltop. From the lighthouse level or the bird’s eye view, the dam looks splendid. If you can make it during sunset, you’ll witness some beautiful panoramas. Hospet also houses the Vijayshree-theme village where rural India comes to life. Based on Rajasthan's culture, the place is enlivened by folk dances and music. There is Rajasthani food, camel and horse rides and even a mehendi counter and astrologers. This beautiful recreation of Rajasthan in the middle of Karnataka brings life to Hospet after sundown and is very enjoyable.
