The night sky is more than just a beautiful backdrop for our planet, like a priceless treasure that we share with our ancestors and future generations. For many, it's a fountain of inspiration, wonder, and wisdom that connects us with nature, culture, and history. It is also a lifeline for the countless creatures that rely on the rhythms of darkness and light for their survival and well-being. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has urged us to protect this precious resource from the harmful effects of artificial light pollution. Read on to know more!

What is a Dark Sky Park?

A Dark Sky Park is an area that has exceptional quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural, and public enjoyment. These sky parks usually have a lighting policy that minimizes light pollution, promotes dark sky-friendly lighting, and educates the public about the benefits of natural darkness while keeping an eye on the night sky quality and the impacts of light pollution on wildlife and human health.

Pench Tiger Reserve: India’s First and Asia’s Fifth Dark Sky Park

Pench Tiger Reserve, located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including the majestic Bengal tiger. It is also a place where tourists can witness the wonders of the night sky, as it has become the country’s first and Asia’s fifth Dark Sky Park. The reserve has achieved this rare feat by adopting a dark sky-friendly lighting policy, retrofitting existing lights, conducting outreach and education programs, and collaborating with the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to establish a Dark Sky Oasis.

A Dark Sky Oasis for Astronomy and Science Education

The Dark Sky Oasis is a concept proposed by the IAU to protect the right to view a star-filled sky and to promote astronomy and science education. It is a network of sites that have excellent night sky conditions and offer opportunities for astronomical observation, research, and learning. Pench Tiger Reserve has joined this network as the first Dark Sky Oasis in India and the second in Asia. The reserve has installed a telescope and a planetarium to enhance the experience of the visitors and to inspire them to learn more about the universe.

A Unique Travel Destination for Skygazers

Pench Tiger Reserve offers a unique travel destination for enthusiasts of all things nocturnal and stargazers: a place where one can explore the stunning wilderness by day and marvel at the awe-inspiring celestial spectacle by night; a place where one can encounter the tigers and the sky full of stars in all its glory; a place where one can discover the beauty of nature and the mystery of the cosmos.
