Koki Shishido has been travelling through India since November last year. A content creator who specialises in Instagram reels and YouTube videos, he’s been exploring our vast country and sharing his unique perspectives with his growing audience.
An entrepreneur in Japan, Koki has taken out a year to experience India’s sights, sounds and not to forget food! He’s often seen speaking in the local language in his videos as he tours India and showcases its streetfood in a fun and honest way. More recently, he documented sharing a meal with an elderly man in Mumbai and went viral for it with several major news channels covering the story. When asked about this, Koki humbly replies, “I’m always helping poor people. So that video was not so unique to me and is very simple. For me it’s just nomal life.”
Koki discovered India to be a great source of inspiration for his vlog while he was in Egypt last year. While travelling with a couple of backpackers, he asked them where he should travel to and they immediately suggested India. The diversity and culture is something Koki felt would be good both for him to experience as a traveller but also great content for his channel that’s focused on bringing the culture of the world to his Japanese audiences.
Koki has already covered a lot of places during his stay in India. New Delhi, Varanasi, Gaya, Kolkata, Puri, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Auroville, Bangalore, Kodaikanal, Mannavanur, Kochi, Alappuzha, Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kanyakumari, Goa, Hampi, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai - the list is only growing! But when asked which city he loved the most, Bangalore tops the list for its great weather and culture.
Koki’s main inspiration to vlog has been so he can showcase the world outside of Japan to his home country. “I want to convey the charm of travelling abroad to everyone. Especially to the Japanese. Because only 14% of Japan visits a foreign country in their lifetime. So they don't know how amazing another country is, especially in terms of the culture, food, nature, and life” says Koki enthusiastically. Koki’s videos on India have been going viral for their quirky, fun and honest views.
When asked about what he loves about India the most, Koki thinks that while India is starkly different from Japan, it’s a beautiful country one must experience. “Life in India is so fresh and stimulating for me. Throw away the stereotypes and enjoy the real India with your own eyes. This country is a very special country in the world.”, says Koki.
Koki is planning to visit Nepal next and return to India to discover the country further. He often hosts meet-ups in the city and posts to his Instagram to invite followers to dine with him. So follow him to catch a glimpse of India through Koki’s eyes and fall in love with our country once again!
