The emerald-swathed, mountainous city is home to an iconic place of the country, which is the Kandy Lake. Its origins run back to the reign of King Sri WickramaRajasinghe when it was built in 1807. The lake has been constructed in the place of a scenic pond called the “Kiri Muhuda” in the native language when translated means the “Sea of Milk.” It is an ideal place for a relaxing stroll at any time of the day.

Situated in the royal palace complex of the former kingdom of Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth has played a major role in Sri Lankan politics since the olden days. It houses the relic of the tooth of Lord Buddha and is known to perform rituals thrice every day. The present-day temple was founded by King Sri Veera Parakrama Narendra Sinha, who was the last Sinhalese King of Sri Lanka.

Lying near the Mahaweli River, the longest of its kind in Sri Lanka is the country’s oldest botanical gardens. The Royal Botanical Gardens is famed for its mélange of orchid collection and a plethora of other flora. An inconspicuous visitor may also spot animals such as monkeys and chameleons peeping out of the branches. This is a perfect location for a day trip when you’re holidaying at one of the holiday bungalows in Nuwara Eliya.

Towering over the scenic city of Kandy is one of the largest seated statues of Lord Buddha in the country. It is situated on a mountain called the “Bahirava Kanda,” which can be roughly translated as the “Gnome Mountain” in the English language. Tourists can climb atop this mountain for a spectacular panoramic view of the majestic city of Kandy.
