Discovering the Charm of Missouri

My International Traveler’s Experience:

About Missouri:

Missouri, in the mid-west allows you to explore the vast landscape beauty. Unlike popular cities like New York or Los Angeles Missouri is a quite American college town with a blend of academic culture, outdoor activities and Mid-western Hospitality. I first heard about Missouri in Columbia from its unique Vine Yards which allows the visitors to explore and taste the wines. Not to forget its traditional culinary, It’s an Archetypal town exploring the natural beauty of Midwest.

The Decision:

After reading much about Missouri, I decided to travel to Missouri and spend a week to explore the scenic virgin beauty. I finalized the dates and checked with my travel agent for the tickets and the formalities to be completed for my visa. As it was a holiday season, there was a huge demand for the airlines, however the travel agent got through the tickets without much delay.

The Journey Begins

I flew down to (COU) Columbia Regional airport in an hour and half time from Chicago (ORD). Though the airport is small but efficient, providing a warm and welcoming gateway to the city. It took some time to rent a car but was easy. Renting a car gave me a freedom to explore the surrounding areas. As I drove into the city, I was greeted by a blend of modern amenities and historic charm.

First Impressions

I straight drove to University of Missouri. The grand and magnificent columns in the premises of the university accounts for the historic architecture combined with the vibrant youthful energy of Mizzou, creating a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Within a few yards of the university is the downtown area locally called as ‘The District’. Being a weekend, the area was bustling with the youth and with the vibrant lights. The are features an array of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, all within the walkable distance of the university.

Exploring The District

The district quickly became my favorite part of Columbia. I spent hours wandering through its streets, discovering unique boutiques, Painting cafes, cozy cafes, and local art galleries. The farmers market, held in the heart of downtown, was a highlight, offering fresh produce, local crafts, and a chance to interact with friendly locals.

The University of Missouri

Though there is a lot to see and mention about the historic university we transcend to few of the highlights

A visit to Columbia wouldn’t be complete without exploring the University of Missouri campus. MU was founded in 1839 and is the oldest state university west of the Mississippi River. Academic Hall, the main University building which housed the administration, library and classrooms, was destroyed by fire in 1892. The Columns, all that remain of Academic Hall, are the symbolic center of campus. After the fire, an effort was made by other towns to have the University moved to their location. However, Columbia citizens helped raise funds to keep the University in their city. Jesse Hall, the present main administration building, was completed in 1895. It and the 17 buildings surrounding Francis Quadrangle are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Jesse Hall, built in 1895 to replace Academic Hall is the centerpiece of the MU campus. The top floor of Jesse was used as a rifle range during the early part of the 20th century. Today you won’t find rifles in Jesse Hall, but many of MU’s administrative offices are here, including those of the chancellor, administrative services, admissions, cashiers, research, registration, student affairs, visitor relations and university affairs.

Francis quadrangle: The Quad — which is sometimes called red campus because of the classic brick architecture — has long been a symbol of Mizzou pride and history. It is named after David R. Francis, the governor of Missouri who was instrumental in keeping the university in Columbia after Academic Hall burned in 1892.

The Columns: One of the most photographed sites in Missouri, the Columns represent the core of Mizzou pride and tradition. They are all that remain of the university’s original administrative and classroom building, Academic Hall.

Hill and Townsend Halls: These buildings are a part of MU’s College of Education. Completed in 1936, Townsend served for many years as a laboratory school for elementary and secondary students. University students received classroom experience here as part of their College of Education training program. Today, the college prepares future teachers for the classrooms of the 21st century.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

Columbia is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, and I made sure to take full advantage of it. I started with the grindstone parkway trail. The topography of the park was shaped by the long, slow erosion processes of two streams, Grindstone and Hinkson Creeks, as they meandered and formed their valleys. The bluffs and other rock outcrops are sedimentary, being limestone with chert pockets. These formations were laid down in shallow seas 250 to 300 million years ago. Animals now extinct once roamed these lands, erosion from a continental ice age had its impact, and the first humans that lived here were Indians. The beautiful trekking was more satisfying than anything else. The next day I drove to lake of Ozarks, which is the largest state park.

Another gem was the MKT Trail, a converted rail trail perfect for biking and jogging, connecting Columbia to the scenic Katy Trail State Park. Rock Bridge Memorial State Park offered incredible hiking trails, including the popular Devil’s Icebox Trail, which leads to an impressive cave system.

Cultural Highlights

Columbia boasts a rich cultural scene, and I was fortunate to catch a performance at the Missouri Theatre, a beautifully restored historic venue. The True/False Film Fest, an acclaimed documentary film festival held annually, draws visitors from around the world and showcases the city’s vibrant arts community.

Culinary Adventures

The food scene in Columbia was a delightful surprise. From farm-to-table restaurants to diverse international cuisine, there was no shortage of delicious options. I particularly enjoyed dining at Sycamore, known for its locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes. Flat Branch Pub & Brewing offered excellent craft beers and a relaxed atmosphere.
