Just In: A 13th Century Tunnel Was Recently Discovered by ASI in New Delhi

Tripoto

Recently, officials of a children's museum had an unexpected discovery of a century-old tunnel-like construction near Siri Fort in New Delhi. The tunnel, which is thought to have been there since the 13th or 14th century, was found during one of the redevelopment projects carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India, the country's top government agency for conducting research and protecting cultural-historical monuments.

About the tunnel:

"The arching structure's aperture is currently visible", the officials continued, "and no further excavating will be done."

They claim that the tunnel will remain intact and serve as one of the exhibits of the museum. According to ASI Superintending Archaeologist Praveen Singh, this structure appeared as they were constructing a 4 m path from the entrance to the main road.

Previous Discoveries:

Prior to the museums opening in 2011, officials had discovered a number of clay artifacts that were thought to be the possessions of commoners serving in the administration of Delhi's emperors in the 13th and 14th centuries.

In the capital of India, new tunnels have frequently been found. Not very long ago, the people of the city were in a state of shock when a hidden tunnel linking the historic Red Fort with the current Delhi Legislative Assembly building was found, in 2021. The British utilized the tunnel to escape retaliation from freedom fighters following the 1857 revolt for India's independence.

As suggested by Media Reports, officials have indicated that they do not yet know where the tunnel-like structure leads and that they will only continue their excavation if higher authorities give them permission.
