Bellary is the name of a city in the ballari District. This place is known to have been ruled by the very famous Adil Shahi and most of the buildings still found here were made during his reign. There is an interesting story behind the name 'Ballari'. It is said that once a group of merchants visited this place on work purpose but could not find any Shivalinga to worship. After a lot of thinking, they took a balla or a seru (measuring cup) and put it upside down to make it look like a Shivalinga. They started worshipping this as Balleshwara, another name for Shiva. This name later became Malleshwara and the Malleshwara Temple here has originated from this source only.
