An hour's drive from the Coorg town, Dubare is a deciduous forest located right adjacent to the Kaveri river. It is an important base for the Karnataka Forest Department's elephants.

This place would offer you a chance to get to know these giant, enchanting creatures better. With a host of activities built around this, many a guest has left the camp with a sense of responsibility to do their bit towards protecting elephants.

To reach the camp, you need to cross the river and ferry services are quite good. The boat ride would be a nice chilling experience. The elephant camp lets the tourists enjoy the sight of elephants bathing, eating and doing other activities nearby. The tour would be like camping with the big giant elephants in their natural habitat. You can see the huge Asian elephants playing in the water and then showering with water using their trunks.

I got lucky to see one elephant showering his visitors with water as well!

If you are interesting in getting your hands dirty, then you can volunteer to scrub the elephants and bathe them, as well as feed them with the mahouts.

Other than watching the giant elephants the visitors can also spot many peacocks, sambhar moving in herds to the river banks. There are numerous varieties of birds and chirping around. You can go for a jeep safari to enjoy the wildness of the forests.

The elephant camp has fixed visiting hours - from 9AM to 6PM - between which you'll be allowed to interact with the animals.

Coorg, often called as "The Scotland of India", is indeed a beautiful place to visit and it wouldn't fail to mesmerize you with the lush green Western Ghats and the stretch of tea gardens sprawling across the valleys. While there are certain things that you will obviously see, I would recommend you to visit the Dubare Elephant Camp - a hidden gem in the Coorg District.
