We wanted to have some short weekend trip and we chose Gir. An overnight travel from Ahmedabad and we were dropped to our hotel in the morning.
After having some rest and lunch, we decided to go for some lion-watching [if u can say that:)]. There are two places where u can have chance to see lions. First, Dewaliya Gir Interpretation Zone, a small 100 sq km area in which u will have to roam in mini-buses provided by forest department. They have some 14 lions kept in this area so that no one goes without seeing lions from Gir. We saw some 11 lions and that was good according to driver of our bus.
In the evening, we just strolled around in the town. The real feel of jungle will be when you take Safari in Gir sanctury. there are 3 timing for safari. 6.30 -.9.30, 9.30 - 12.30 & 3.30 - 6.30. Highest chances to see lion is in morning 6.30 safari. But for that you have to either have online e permit booked well in advance or be ready to stand in the line from 4 in the morning. 15 e permits are issued online and 15 on the spot at forest office in Sasan Gir. Since we couldn't book permits online in advance and we didnt want to stand in the line that early, we chose to go for 3.30 Safari. We stood in the line at 11.30 and got permit at 3. You will have to be in first 15 to get permit. and then started our journey in open safari. There are 8 decided routes and u will be given any one. U cannot deviate from your route. If u cannot see any lion, unfortunately we couldn't, u will see other wild animals in jungle like deer, sambar, etc. Kamleshwar dam is home of many crocodiles in gir. We couldn't see any lion in Safari but it was good experience to roam in jungle.
