Delhi is exhausting. I like to get away whenever I can. My friend, a Garhwali Delhi boy, recommended a getaway to Auli for the weekend and insisted on getting there on a motorbike. I am always game for some backseating. The views, the convenience, the bumbreaking bumps and the total loss of control along the Delhi-to-Auli distance... What's not to love?
So Auli, we went to. We got to Dehradun on a Bus and picked up our ride. We began our journey along the Ganga, riding by Rishikesh, many prayags (confluences of tributaries) and Rafting campsites. The roads where narrow, rocky and extremely high up there. The mountains were naked; all the trees were absent and the direct, unflitered sunlight was trying at times. The road curved dangerously narrow sometimes. After many shrill squeals, awestruck gasps and relieved sighs, we were finally at Joshimath - Our stop for the night.
Auli is 30 minutes from Joshimath. We set out early next morning. Past the stairs and the ski-lift, was our destination: the entrance to Nanda Devi National Park. We spent the entire day hiking up the hills, and lying down in the grass. Stunning views rewarded us after every climb.
Back to Delhi on Monday with a sun-burnt nose and some beautiful memories.
