It was our first International trip and we were eagerly waiting to take up the daring adventure. Pigeon Island National Park haven't failed to admire us with its pristine cool waters and enthralling beauty. It was an half an hour motor boat ride from Nilaveli Beach. There was a ticketing counter at the beach and we had to pay an amount of 1500 LKR as an entrance to the Island. We had to hire the motor boat and it costed around 3000 LKR per boat for return trip together with a snorkeling instructor and snorkel equipments. We were a group of 8 people, so we had to hire two boats.
The Island was less crowded and there were no other people in the Island except us when we arrived. The snorkeling instructor was well trained and he gave us briefing on how to breath with the snorkel equipment. It was a thrilling experience and we were quite excited to encounter the underwater. The clear water made the snorkeling easy and safe starting from 1 feet of water to 7 feet. Initially we were little scared of the blue sea but our instructor comforted us. It had a wide coral reef with nearly a hundred species of gorgeous corals. We were able to witness a variety of underwater species like trumper fish, angel fish, parrot fish, eels and more number of blacktip sharks. We were able to spot a huge green sea turtle which swiftly swam in front of us. Apart from snorkeling, Pigeon Island is great for scuba diving and fishing too. It is the best place to experience underwater and it is suitable for a day outing from Trincomalee.
