Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district is set to embrace a new wave of tourism, with its serene and picturesque border areas opening up to visitors. The district, located along the International Border, has long been known for its turbulent history and its proximity to the highly contested border between India and Pakistan. However, in recent years, the region has undergone a remarkable transformation, with a renewed ceasefire between the two countries bringing about a sense of peace and stability. And now, with the Jammu and Kashmir administration's approval, the district is all set to showcase its hidden gems to tourists, with the introduction of homestays near the famous Baba Chamliyal shrine in the Ramgarh sector.

As per news, the decision to allow the construction of homestays near the International Border is a significant step towards promoting border tourism in the region. It not only offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the local way of life but also serves as a testament to the prevailing peace in the area. Former Sarpanch Mohan Singh Bhatti, who has been a witness to the district's turbulent past, is now ready to welcome tourists to his homestay. His warm hospitality and local insights offer a glimpse into the region's newfound calm and the potential for tourism in the border areas.

What makes Samba a delightful place for tourists?

The district of Samba is home to many historical and cultural sites, including the 300-year-old Bamu Chak temple and the renowned Baba Chamliyal shrine. Another hidden gem is the Chamliyal shrine, which boasts of stunning architecture and rich history. For those seeking spiritual solace, the Baba Bali Karan and Baba Sidh Goria shrines are must-visit destinations.

These sites hold immense significance for the locals and are now set to attract visitors from all over the country. The introduction of homestays near these sites will not only provide tourists with a unique and authentic experience but also boost the local economy and create job opportunities for the residents.

The Baba Chamliyal shrine, situated on the Indo-Pak border, has been a symbol of peace and camaraderie between the two nations for decades. However, in recent years, this cross-border haven has been marred by instances of cross-border firing, disrupting the tranquillity of the area.

In light of this, a homestay owner in the border village of Dagh Channi, Mohan Singh Bhatti, has come up with a unique solution to ensure the safety of visitors during potential shelling from across the border.

What’s so unique about Bhatti’s homestay?

Bhatti's homestay, located in the village of Fatwal, offers an immersive experience for tourists looking to get a glimpse of life on the border. Along with providing accommodation, Bhatti has also constructed an underground bunker, hidden from plain sight, to provide visitors with a safe haven in case of any cross-border shelling.

He says that on a visit to the border, one may see everything but not the bunker, which is used during cross-border shelling. Bhatti believes that those who have not seen the bunker have not truly experienced the border. The recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, brokered on February 25, 2021, had raised hopes for restored tranquillity at the border. However, these hopes were shattered in November 2022, when a BSF jawan lost his life due to firing from Pakistan Rangers. This incident once again highlighted the need for preparedness and safety measures for those living and visiting the border areas.

Bhatti's underground bunker offers a unique experience for visitors, giving them a taste of life on the border and a sense of preparedness in case of any unforeseen circumstances. The bunker is a testament to the resilience and determination of the people living on the border, who refuse to let the threat of cross-border shelling dampen their spirits. Bhatti's homestay has become a popular spot for tourists, especially those interested in understanding the dynamics of the Indo-Pak border.

The centre and J-K administration are both actively promoting border tourism, and Samba is no exception. However, last year, visitors to Chamliyal shrine faced accommodation problems. To address this issue, Sharma is promoting homestays in the area, providing a unique and authentic experience for tourists.

How to reach Samba?

Reaching Samba is also now easier than ever. For air travel, one can fly into Jammu Airport, a mere 40 kilometres away. The Jammu Tawi Railway Station offers well-connected rail routes, making it convenient for those who prefer train travel. And for those who enjoy the scenic route, the district is well-connected by national highways and well-maintained roads.
