The monastery is situated in the Sumlur hamlet in the Nubra valley and was founded by Lama Tsultim Nima 140 years ago. The monastery is 124 miles away from Leh and serves around 50 monks who use it to do daily tasks. The location is in a beautiful natural setting, filled with glorious colours like gold, red ocher, and white.

Religious flags flank the monastery’s entryway, and hallways are decorated with Buddhist murals, including those of Buddha, Dharamchakra, the Four Heavenly Kings, and other details of Buddhism.

The new arrival is greeted at the monastery gate by a 7-year-old kid who blesses everyone and then ties strings of prayer beads on their wrists.
