Now Citizens Can Protect Heritage Properties Across Uttarakhand. Here's How!

Remember the last time you went to a monument and couldn't stop complaining about its low maintenance? Well, the Ministry of Tourism along with the Archaeological Survey of India has finally come up with a new scheme where you can help preserve heritage buildings in Uttarakhand.

“Adopt A Heritage” is a one of a kind initiative where private sector companies, public sector companies and even individuals can apply to take responsibility of heritage sites in order to maintain them. In the past, we have seen the success of various private and public sector collaborative projects, however, this initiative is sure to redefine the way citizens associate themselves with heritage properties. The Uttarakhand government has listed 10 properties that are open for adoption. They have termed potential adopters as Monument Mitras who will work towards reviving heritage sites and making them more tourist-friendly.

Properties Up For Adoption:

Uttarakhand is home to the country's maximum number of temples, tourist destinations and archaic monuments that receive thousands of tourist every year, but barely any care or funding. These are the properties and places that you or your company can adopt:

George Everest Estate, Mussorie, Dehradun

Maa Raj Rajeshwari Devi Temple, Devalgarh

Gartang Gali, Nelong Valley, Chamoli

Chaainsheen Bugyal, Uttarkashi

Narayan Koti Temple, Rudrapryag

Deeba Danda, Guru Garhi, Pauri

Crank's Ridge, Kasar Devi, Almora

Pithoragarh Fort, Pithoragarh

Sati Ghat, Kankhal, Haridwar

Responsibilities of a Monument Mitra

As a Monument Mitra, one will have to ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the area. This will include taking care of the premises, arranging for drinking water, making the area friendly for differently-abled, installing standardised signage, public convenience centres, illumination, surveillance systems and night-time viewing facilities, to mention a few. The overall idea is to protect and enhance the property in such a way that its aesthetic, history and sanctity are maintained for pilgrimage and tourist purposes.

How to Become a Monument Mitra:

To become a Monument Mitra, all you have to do is, choose the property you want to protect and submit your expression of interest via the form on Uttarakhand Tourism website. After this, the tourism department will evaluate and shortlist applicants, and finally select Monument Mitras.
