Lothal a 5000 year old port town, once thriving on the banks of Sabarmati is part of the ancient Indus Vally Civilization. Dating from 3700 BCE and discovered in 1954, this ancient town is situated 85 Km from Ahmadabad in Dholka taluka, of Ahmedabad District. It is situated in proximity to Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar and Rajkot, three urban centers of modern Gujarat.
A desolate place today was once a busy trade center connecting Saurastra with ancient harappan cities in Sindh. Sabarmati River of those days has dried up and the Arabean sea near lothal has turned into desert of Kutch (Rann of Kutch).
Archaeologists believe that change is climatic conditions have brought an end to this civilization. Remains at lothal suggest that the ancient civilization was well designed with state of art town planning and drainage system. Graineries, elevated platforms, bathrooms, stone equipment and mud potteries shows technological progress of the society.
At present one can see port, grainery, mud houses and brick structures in excavation site. There is a museum which contains utensils, jewellery, stone saws and skeletons of the ancient civilization.
How to Reach
Its 85 Km from Ahmedabad city and 96 Km from Bhavnagar.
Railway Route - Lothal - Burkhi Railway station is 4.5 Km from the site. It takes 3.5 hours to reach through train from Ahmedabad.
Visiting hours - 9 AM to 6 PM
Fee- Rs 5 /- per person
Its a remote place so one will not find any restaurant or eatery nearby. Also its advisable to visit with personal travel arrangements as auto rikshaw or other modes of public transport are unavailable.
