Got your eyes set on Ladakh for your big 2024 travel plans? Here's a 14 day Leh Ladakh itinerary, that takes you around all the must visit destinations in Ladakh including some not so touristy destinations.

Without further ado, let's get into the Ladakh itinerary:

Day 1

Upon your arrival at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, you'll be welcomed by the invigorating mountain air and the friendly "Jullay!" of the locals. Given Leh's high altitude of over 11,000 feet (3,500 meters), it's crucial to take it easy on your first day. Start by sipping on ginger tea to help acclimatise your body. If you are feeling fine, take a leisurely stroll through the narrow alleys of Leh Old Town, where you can pick up some souvenirs and perhaps have the first taste of Ladahki food. If health permits do visit the ancient Leh Palace, offering breathtaking views of the city and surrounding mountains.

Days 2-3

On the next 2 days set out on a spiritual exploration of Leh's renowned monasteries, each offering a unique glimpse into Ladakh's rich cultural heritage. First up Thiksey Monastery, where you can witness the serene morning prayers and marvel at the striking golden Buddha statue, a symbol of peace and enlightenment. Next, venture to Hemis Monastery, the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, boasting a fascinating collection of artefacts and religious relics.

If you're fortunate to visit in July, don't miss the vibrant Hemis Festival, a colorful celebration of Tibetan Buddhism. Finally, journey into the picturesque Nubra Valley to discover the iconic Diskit Monastery. Here, you'll be greeted by the sight of the giant Maitreya Buddha statue, offering a moment of quiet reflection amidst the breathtaking Himalayan landscape.

Days 4-5

In Nubra Valley start your day by heading towards Khardung La Pass, one of the world's highest motorable passes, offering unparalleled panoramic views of snow-capped peaks that stretch as far as the eye can see. Don't forget your camera for this breathtaking experience! Next, head to Hunder Sand Dunes, where you can hop on a Bactrian camel and traverse the mesmerizing landscape of golden sands. Pro tip: sunsets here are otherworldly! Conclude your time in Nubra Valley with a visit to Turtuk Village, a quaint hamlet nestled amidst the rugged terrain. Take the time to explore the village, interact with friendly locals, and indulge in local flavours.

Days 6-7

Head towards the ever-so-popular Pangong Lake. Traverse rugged terrain and drive through the breathtaking Chang La Pass, where the stark contrast of barren mountains against the ever-changing hues of the lake creates a scene straight out of a postcard. Upon reaching Pangong Lake, decompress in nature and spend the night in cozy tents under the vast expanse of the starlit sky.

Days 8-9

Rise early to drive towards Tso Moriri Lake, a hidden gem nestled amidst the rugged terrain of Ladakh. This pristine lake offers a sanctuary for migratory birds and is home to wild horses roaming freely along its shores. Take a moment to connect with the nomadic Changpa community, whose traditional way of life is intertwined with the land and its resources. Make your way to Korzok Monastery, a sacred haven overlooking the lake. Here, you can seek blessings and find solace amidst the ancient walls of this revered monastery.

Days 10-11

Journey to Kargil and Drass, pay homage to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War at the poignant Kargil War Memorial. Take in the awe-inspiring view of Tiger Hill, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Indian armed forces. Continue your journey to Drass, known as the second coldest inhabited place on Earth, and visit the Drass War Memorial. Here, you can learn about the valor and sacrifices of our soldiers, whose heroics echo through the valleys and mountains of this formidable region.

Days 12-14

Continue your journey towards Srinagar, but not without a memorable stopover at the picturesque Sonamarg, affectionately referred to as the "Meadow of Gold." Spend a leisurely day amidst the breathtaking beauty of Sonamarg. Take a stroll along the flower-strewn trails, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and perhaps live your best life at a charming café. Or go on activities like trekking, horse riding, and even trout fishing in the sparkling streams. After a rejuvenating day in Sonamarg, resume your journey to Srinagar, the crown jewel of Kashmir. In Srinagar, immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of Dal Lake with a peaceful shikara ride, wander through the vibrant Mughal Gardens adorned with colorful blooms, and explore the bustling markets of old city. Don't forget to visit the iconic Shankaracharya Temple for panoramic views of the city and the serene Hazratbal Shrine, a symbol of religious harmony.
