A few days after allowing daily special passenger trains for stranded migrants from different parts of the country, the government has now announced that they will gradually revive the Indian Railways operations in full swing.

On May 10, the government released a circular notifying the people about the schedule of new special passenger trains. For now, 15 special trains (a total of 30 journeys) will run from New Delhi station to 15 major cities in the country. These cities include Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Mumbai Central, Ahmedabad and Jammu Tawi.

Book the tickets online

Only people with valid confirmed tickets would be allowed to take on the journey. However, the tickets counter shall remain closed and tickets can only be booked online. Railways Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted and confirmed this, and mentioned that booking of tickets will commence from 11 May, at 4.00 pm. Tickets will be available on the IRCTC website.

Proper precautions will be taken by the authorities to ensure the safety of the passengers. Face cover and health check-ups before departure will be mandatory and only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to travel.

Other train routes will resume soon

Subsequently, the Indian Railways will start more passenger trains based on the availability of coaches. Notably, 20,000 coaches for COVID-19 care centres and an adequate number of coaches have been reserved to facilitate the operation of up to 300 trains every day as Shramik Special for stranded migrants.

The news has come as a big relief for people stuck in different parts of the country. As India has entered the last week of the third phase of the lock-down, which is scheduled to end on May 17, the government is planning to begin a phased re-opening of various sectors of the economy. We hope to soon receive news for air travel as well.
