I and my boyfriend are fans of Anthony Bourdain's travel series. When we travel we don't only do the touristic things but soak into the culture, food and people of the place. So after booking flight tickets, we plan our iteneriaries with recomendations from travel bloggers, chefs and writers.

We planned our trip to Turkey going to the lesser known parts like Antalya and Cappadocia that left us with only a day and a half in Istanbul. We didn't have time for standing in two hour lines to check the Blue mosque and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. So we ent around it by taking amazing recommendations from Anthony Bourdain and exploring the city like a local. Here are our take 5s-

1. Soggy Burgers in Taksim Square:

I had seen Bourdain gobble a few and my mouth started watering. I did just that when I reached taksim square- gobbled up a few without thinking twice (cause they are also very cost freindly- just 2 Turlish Lira ). These are beef burgers and it is the first time I had beef in my life. And there started my motto ,"if it tastes good, don't put it on a guilt trip!" . You must keep Kızılkayalar Taksim on your to-do list when in Istanbul.

2. Go to Spice market early in the morning:

The market is less crowded and the vendors are more entertaining and friendly during the morning time. We were marvelled by the range of spices, some very unique from what we use in Indian cooking. I instantly fell in love with sumac.

Another tip of visiting markets when they are less crowded is that you get free urkist tea at all places, and behold! what a variety it is. Apple, pommegranate and some very unique combinations of wonderfulness just teased by boiling water to ooze out their goodness.

3. Eat mussels at Galata Köprüsü

No I have eaten mussles at many European places with the magic of garlic, salt and lemon. But in Instnabul, the mussles have the realization of where Europe meets Asia. And not to forget the awesome city view the Galata bridge offers.

4. Enjoy Pav and Kaymak

Ofcourse you will have Shakshuka, kebab and doner when in Turkey. But the real beauty is in discovering the hidden gems. Growing up in Mumbai, Bun-maska at an Iranian cafe was a usual thing. Only those hwo have experienced it would know the charm it has and appreciate the thrill in discovering its diverse variants in the middle East. Presenting bread and Kaymak- kaymak is what by grandmother would call 'loni' or 'makhaan'. It is fresh out of kitchen and along with a soft, warm bread is a great start to your morning.

5. How can I forget Baklava!

Baklavas are everywhere in Turkey. But if you are looking to pack some for friends and family, visit Güllüoğlu. They are everywhere in Instanbul and also have some fake ones using their name.

If you are in the right place, you will be spoil for choice.
