Amber Fort, (11 km North of central Jaipur, local bus #5 from Hawa Mahal or New Gate), ☎ +91 14 1253 0293. 08:00-17:30. This massive fort-palace complex built in hybrid Hindu-Muslim style dates back to Raja Man Singh and was the royal palace of the Kachwahas from c. 1600-1727. The name has nothing to do with the rather pretty pastel yellow colour; instead, the fort is named after the town of Amber, in turn named after the goddess Amba. The main sights within the fort include the Sheesh Mahal, adorned with thousands on thousands of mirror tiles on the walls and ceiling. The fort/palace grounds are sprawling and the information panels (hindi/english) are somewhat limited, so it might be worth getting an audio guide or a real guide. It's a bit of a hike up from the town, and the touristy thing to do is to hitch an elephant ride to the top (in order to get an elephant it is better to to arrive there in the morning, otherwise at midday the elephants are over. But the road that elephants pass is not so long).
Day 2!! We woke up at 6:30 am inspite of being drunk the previous night!! We had already planned a cycle tour and I got in touch with some cycling companies in Jaipur, however they were turning out to be quite expensive so we asked a local auto guy where we could rent a cycle. There’s this lill cycle stall infront of Albert hall where you can get cycles for like 10Rs an hour. We cycled around for about an hour or so. The area is beautiful, with a lot of parks and the beautiful Albert Hall monument. We discovered a some other places as well that we didn’t know of. Everything was closed that early in the morning so we could not go. After the cycle ride we went back to our hotel rested, freshened up and had a hearty breakfast. After this we headed to Amer fort. We visited the fort, Seesh Mahal which esentially means a palace of glass which is quite beautiful. Although we had planned to visit the Jaigarh fort after this, we felt we were just looking and doing the same things over and over again. We ditched the Jaigarh fort and took a lill stair trek right infront of the Amer fort. It was a tedious climb but oh so rewarding! We sat at the top of the fort for an hour or so....looking down at the city and just relaxing. (Coming down was much easier) We ended the day at Chowkidhani which is a lill far off from the main city. It was a culmination of Rajasthani food and culture. Here we saw rajasthani folk dances, music shows, magic show, did a bit of pottery, carpet weaving, games etc. The food wasn’t as amazing as we expected but it was a good experience overall. Jaipur is a beautiful, hospitable city with amazing architecture and culture!
Day 4 Morning - WOW! Amber fort was the best... For some reason, I found it even more appealing than the Taj Mahal. I am not drawing comparisons of any sort, its just based in what I felt during the trip. Every window with a view of its own, a proud and magnificent fort atop the rocky hills overlooking the placid lake, the flocks of pigeons and people clad in their traditional dresses. The place is a time capsule in many senses, and hauntingly romantic. Weather was very pleasant even when Delhi was freezing at this time of the year. The only thing that might ruin your experience is the hawkers who wont let go of you once you have given even a glimpse at their goods. Especially near the place where you queue for the elephant ride. They ruined a good part of the ride for me. Avoid paying any attention or interest. You can do with the shopping after completing the fort. For bikers, go past the fort and palace entrance down the road for parking lot. Its just by the side of where you queue for elephant ride. The fort opens around 8 am and closes at 5pm. There are few hotels very close to the fort, Trident, Regenta and Lake View, in decreasing order of rental. I stayed one night at Lake View. You can keep your bikes in the porch here. Pretty safe.
6. Amer Fort Among the famous forts of Jaipur is Amer Fort, also known as Amber Fort Jaipur. The fort isn’t just famous for its historic background but also for its magnificent beauty and architecture. I have heard a lot about this fort have seen it on TV in movies, now it was the time to see it in real. Whoever has to visit Jaipur, Amer Fort remains on the top of the things to do in Jaipur. Visiting Amer Fort Jaipur is really a wonderful experience as you will experience the life of kings; you will get to see how they used to live. Every brick and every stone has stories to tell and you need to feel everything. So without any delay, let’s get lost in the history. If you are travelling to Jaipur, this is a must visit place. Don't miss Sheesh Mahal. Entry Fee – Rs. 100 (Indian), Rs. 500 (Foreigner) Night Entry – Rs.100 Guide – Rs. 200 Audio Guide – Rs. 200 – 250 Hours – 8 AM to 6 PM Last Entry – 5:30PM Night Entry – 7 PM – 9 PM
Amer/Amber Fort – This a gigantic fort palace which had been built and renovated over a span of 137 years by 4 generations of the Rajput rules. The premises of this fort is spread over a very large area. The fort is very artistic. Some of the attraction points there are the Shila Devi Temple which is still being maintained by the palace authorities, Ganesh Pol (a beautifully carved gaint sized entrance to the private palace space), Sheesh Mahal which is decorated by mirror pieces sourced from Belgium, Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khas, the beautiful square garden, the two storied Queens’ Palace for the 9 queens of the King , the Meena bazar area towards the exit (you can still shop here for handicrafts and blankets made in the Amer village). In the premises of Amer fort one can enjoy Elephant rides, though I enjoyed watching the elephants marching one behind the other while people took the rides. There were also some local folk artists playing soulful music at the entrance of the fort.
