How to reach?
Kolli Hills is located almost 360 kms away and takes 8 hours drive from Chennai. People travelling from Chennai can take bus or train to reach Salem and then take another bus from Salem/Attur to reach the hill which takes around 1.5 hours. There are two routes to reach the hill top, in which one route will have 70+ hairpin bends that will offer the travelers many breathtaking views. This hill is well known for bike rides, bike riders will have lots of fun and adventure and we can witness many bike riders while climbing up the hill.
Where did we stay?
There is only one decent hotel named RVR resort to stay as far as I have seen. This resort is located in the prime area from which we can reach to the famous Agaya Ganga waterfalls and Arapaleeswarar temple. The famous masilla falls is also nearby to this resort.
This resort also provides an option to camping, in which they pitch tents in a beautiful location inside the resort where we can spend the whole night.
Must Visit Places
Arapaleeswarar temple and Agaya Ganga waterfalls located close by. To reach Agaya Gangai waterfalls we need climb down upto 1000 steps that would take around 20-40 mins. These steps will be somewhat steeper. Elderly people can avoid taking these steps and there is no other way to reach the waterfalls. I went in the month of March, quite good amount of water was flowing and we took a dip in the waterfall. One should never miss this place as it was quite adventurous and can have lots of fun. Good enough place for taking lots pics.
Masilla falls is also equally good, we need to walk quite a while, but no need to climb up or down, it will be easy for everyone to reach this waterfall.
There are some private waterfalls that are also available, check with the local people or hoteliers to take the correct route. But it will be somewhat adventurous to reach those waterfalls.
There are a Sunset and Sunrise view points, the locations will be picturesque and out of the world.
My Observations
1. Its is peaceful and a pleasant hill town with a very less population
2. There are no much commercial places, so we can breath some pollution free air
3. People here predominantly involved in spices farming, especially black pepper.
4. One day is sufficient to visit these waterfalls, temples and spices market
5. We can purchase some good quality spices and rare breed fruits that will not be found in cities
6. Travel enthusiasts can explore to nearby small towns and villages, that may offer you good picturesque views of hilly terrains and greenish bushes
7. You wont find many good restaurants. RVR resort itself has a restaurant that provides good quality and Veg and Non
8. This place is good for people of all ages, group of friends and families
9. For a solo traveler who travels by a public transport, the expenses would be less than 5000 Rs including travel, food, lodging, sightseeing for one night stay. If there is no lodging and traveled in groups in a car or other private vehicle, then the expenses would be even more less as I see this as a budget friendly place.
Altogether it was a wonderful trip and definitely a worth a visit hill station in Tamilnadu.
