I spent two weeks in Bali and my flight back to Bangalore was via Kuala Lumpur. While booking my flight I noticed that there was a 10-hour layover at KL before the next flight to Bangalore. I wanted to use the layover time to go around and explore the city however, to be able to enter the country, one needs to apply for an e-visa on the government portal - https://malaysiavisa.imi.gov.my/evisa/evisa.jsp which is valid for 30 days and costs around Rs. 3,000. So I decided to spend two days KL instead of one day since I was going to apply for the visa anyway.

Following are the places I visited over 2 days:

Batu Caves

Around 30 minutes away from the city by train, this temple is a popular Hindu shrines dedicated to Murugan. To enter the caves, one has to climb around 200 if you wish to see the place of worship.

Petronas Towers

Also known as Petronas Twin Towers, they are a pair of 88-storey skyscrapers. I would suggest one visits after sunset as the towers look magnificent with the lighting. This area is easily reachable by rail. As soon as you step out of the underground station, the first thing you will see are the towers.

National Mosque Malaysia

A beautiful mosque which features a 73 metre high minaret with a huge prayer hall that can accommodate up to 15,000 people.

Islamic Arts Museum

This is the largest museum of Islamic arts in South East Asia with more than 7,000 artifacts from the Islamic world. The museum explains how Islam was introduced in various countries and how it influenced the people.

KL Tower

Unlike Petronas Towers, it is a 15 minute to reach KL Tower from Bukit Nanas station. There are various levels that you can visit in the tower. I chose to go to the observation deck and it costed me RM 60. Unfortunately it was a rainy day and the view of the city was not great as it was cloudy. So avoid visiting on a rainy day.

Petaling Street, Chinatown

This is market place with several shops selling clothes, watches, bags, etc at reasonable prices. This is also a good spot for eating street food. Note that shops start to close after 8pm and so I would recommend an early visit.

Stay: I stayed in a capsule hotel (Space Hotel) in Chinatown which is located in the city center. There are three types of dorms available - male dorm, female dorm and mixed dorm. The tariff per person is Rs. 1,200/night.

Transportation: I purchased a 2-way KLIA travel pass after arriving at the airport. It costed me RM 120 (approx. Rs. 2,400) which included a round trip from the airport to the city and back with unlimited rides within the city. The pass is valid for two days. The Komuter routes are not included in this pass which means that if you wish to visit Batu caves then you need buy a separate ticket. A round trip to batu caves from the city center is RM 12 (approx. Rs. 240). Bus services are available for going around the city and Grab taxi service is also available.

Food: The two popular street food joints are on Petaling Street (Chinatown) and Bukit Bintang. Grab food service is also available that you can avail to order in.
