Maharashtra is blessed with Western Ghats which is also called as Sahyadri. We live in Pune which is basically surrounded by it. Monsoons are beautiful here and winters are pleasant enough to trek for Sunrise.

Kalsubai Peak is one of most preferable trekking peaks. As it is known by all, Kalsubai is 'Everest of Maharashtra'. It is highest peak in Maharashtra at an elevation of 1646 m.

The Kalsubai trek is considered to be of moderate difficulty. It involves a steep ascent, rocky patches, and a final climb with the help of iron ladders and chains. While it may be challenging for beginners, it's a doable trek with breathtaking views.

The best time to undertake the Kalsubai trek is during the post-monsoon and winter months (September to February). The weather during this time is pleasant, and the landscape is lush green after the monsoon season.

Location Kalsubai is located in the Ahmednagar district of the Western Ghats in Maharashtra, approximately 150 km from Mumbai.

Base Village The trek usually starts from the base village called Bari. Bari is well-connected by road and is the starting point for various trekking routes leading to the summit.

We explored this trail on Jan-23. We started early in the morning and reach the top for Sunrise. As mentioned above, the trek begins at the base village of Bari, known for its rustic charm and warm hospitality. As you set foot on the trail, the lush greenery and the cool mountain air instantly transport you to a world away from the hustle of city life. The path is marked with diverse flora, providing a picturesque backdrop for the ascent.

Midway through the trek, you encounter the Kalsubai temple, dedicated to the local deity. The temple provides a sacred pause, allowing trekkers to soak in the spiritual vibes and gather energy for the final stretch. The view from the temple is nothing short of spectacular, with vast expanses of green valley's stretching as far as the eye can see.

The real highlight of the Kalsubai trek is the sunrise from the summit. The early morning climb to the top is rewarded with a breathtaking spectacle as the first rays of sunlight paint the sky in hues of orange and pink. The feeling of standing atop the highest point in Maharashtra is both humbling and exhilarating.

It takes around 3-4 hours to ascend and 2-3 hours to descend, depending on your pace and fitness level. While the trek is considered moderately difficult, the steep ascents and rocky terrain demand stamina and determination. However, every step is rewarded with panoramic views of the Sahyadri mountain range.

Some general tips, these applies to any one-two day trek :)

Tips for Trekkers:

- Start early to witness the sunrise.

- Carry sufficient water and snacks for the journey.

- Wear sturdy trekking shoes and comfortable clothing.

- Check weather conditions before planning your trek.

- Respect the local culture and environment.

Kalsubai trek is not just a physical challenge but a transformative journey that takes you through nature's wonders. From dense forests to mountainous terrains, every step brings you closer to the summit and a sense of accomplishment.

(N.B. There are bunch of vendors around Pune who can offer you a 2-day package for this trek. We went via TrekPanda.)
