While our trip to Milan wasn't the longest one, it was apt enough to squeeze in a day trip to our schedule. As per the theme of the trip, we weren't quite sure where to go - so we let destiny decide (I advise you not to do that). The top options are - Como, Verona and Florence all year round and Cinque terre which I would recommend for summers.
Since the tickets to Florence were sold out, we decided to head to Como and rightly so. Como is a city at the southern tip of Lake Como in northern Italy. It's very famous for the lake, the gothic como cathedral and the furnicular ride to Brunaten.
Getting to Como by Train
If you're travelling from Milan, it takes around 50 minutes and if you're travelling from Basel then it's a little over 3 hours to get to Como by train. I seem to love train travel, but to each his own - a drive always has it's own charm.
Como, Italy: Things to do
Well I already mentioned those and there is no more to it. What is particularly important is to get down at the station and visit the tourist office before heading out. They guide you well, a cruise on Lake Como is a "must-do" but due to terrible winds on the day we visited; these cruises were not running. (I wasn't particularly disappointed, the cruises on Geneva lake and on Interlaken are way prettier (IMO))
Do take the furnicular up to visit Brunate which is a small cozy village in Lombard. It offers magnificent views, has a couple of restaurants and a souvenir shop to die for.
The city of Como also boasts of it's super cute cafes, shops and winter markets. It was a pleasure to just walk in the narrow lanes of the city, and admire the tiny shops on either side. Shopping in Italy, is a given.
Weather in Como
Kind of the same as Milan, the only problem was the wind; so make sure you carry your warm scarves/stoles along.
