Versova (Koli) Seafood Festival
Day 1

If you are a seafood lover and especially mad about crabs, prawns and Fish trust me koli seafood festival is best place for you. This is it, folks! The mother of all food festivals gets bigger and more popular every year. The Kolis, who are the fishing community of Maharashtra. The Aim to informed, is to empower the fisherwomen and raise awareness about the issues faced by the Kolis, in addition to highlighting the community’s role in safeguarding the coast. This is 3-day festival to celebrate and people of all castes and communities throng to this event to have a blast. Going to the Koli Seafood Festivals like attending a rave – thousands of people having a great time by watching the Koli dancers and folk musicians performing onstage. The Versova seafood festival has been going on for over a decade now and every year, it attracts 20 to 25,000 seafood enthusiasts and you can see many celebrities in the festival.

Over 100 Koli women and men participate in this event to prepare the food served. The women are decked in traditional attire and Jewellery – they do the cooking and run the show there are around 50-60 stalls each stall has a family manning it. There are over 20 varieties of fish served including Pomfret, Surmai, Basa, Mackerel, Tuna, Ghol, Shellfish, Mandeli, Rani and Bombil as well as crustaceans like king prawns, lobsters and crabs. There’s much to choose from: bombil pakodas, grilled king crabs, fish curries, prawn biryani, even a simple bangda (mackerel) fish fry can be delicious. Order what everyone else is having, or ask the brisk but friendly Koli ladies in colorful saris for a recommendation. Best of all, its affordable fare, with a full meal coming up to a few hundreds at most. (Alcohol is allowed in the festival but u have to get it from the outside they don’t sale alcohol on their stalls)
