Be it Maldives or Munich, everyone wants their vacations to be within a budget. And saving money on your hotel stay is often the foremost on every traveller's mind. And besides discounts, and upgrades, there are a few hacks which will help you make the most of your stay at a hotel. During longer vacations, especially we end up staying at five or six different hotels within a week. And while it's hectic, and adventurous, you need to keep in mind that you should get your money's worth.
Besides basic amenities and perks, you can totally try these clever hacks to make your vacation stay more fun and hassle-free. For instance, you don't always have to pay to have coffee in your room. You can easily Netflix and chill in your hotel room on a night in. You can just get incredible discounts if you think ahead. You can also get clean clothes for every city. Almost every smart traveller relies on these clever hacks to have a better vacation, and it's time you learn them too.
For longer stays
If you are going to be staying at a hotel for a week or more, do not just rely on the discounts you get on the booking sites. You can call up the hotel and negotiate a better deal. For longer stays, hotels often offer upgraded discounts, as hotels always prefer long-stay guests than new guests, since they can turn a better profit from one room. Major hotel chains also have reward points and separate offers for people who are staying longer. So, do make sure to check up on the available offers.
If you're travelling with your family, or friends, you will always be short of plugging points in your rooms. Especially if you are not carrying a multi plug point device. There are so many things to charge up before you step out - your phone, your cameras, your laptops, your Mac books. Use the hotel TV to charge up at least some of your device. If you have adjoining rooms, and have access to two TV sets, make the most of it.
Save up on Wi-fi charges
This is something you really should sort out before your trip. Most hotels, especially luxury ones often charge you quite a lot for Wi-fi. You often end up paying on an hourly basis just to use the Internet. You don't need to use the hotel Wi-fi at all, if you are smart. Just call up your Internet provider and set up a hotspot service. If your room has a TV with an HDMI port, you can access the hotspot connection and stream anything you like, from Netflix or HBO to your big screen TV directly from your laptop or your phone.
A stay at a major hotel chain almost always comes with perks. If you're on vacation to mark an anniversary or a birthday, or to celebrate something special, call ahead and let the hotel know about that. Especially if you are on your honeymoon, definitely connect with the hotel management to see what kind of upgrade they might offer. A lot of travellers have benefited from this hack, and have even got some of their stay comped, or a deluxe suite at a much cheaper rate.
Offer a review
The Internet age has equipped the travellers spectacularly. You can always offer to review the hotel at a site of their choosing, to get a better deal for your room. And who knows you might even get comped? Sometimes, major hotel chains do not offer discounts to reviewers, as they don't really need it, but most places do. Especially if the hotel is relatively new, or just has had work done. You can call up the hotel in advance about it, or just fix something on the spot.
Get extra dishes
This is a very basic hack, and yet most of us often forget it when needed. We often skip the hotel food and have takeouts or local food , as they are cheaper. When you do order something from the hotel always ask for extra dishes and keep a couple of spares in the room. This way when you bring in the food from someplace else, you don't have to use foil papers or newspapers.
When travelling with a baby
It is often advised that you should keep your baby's clothes and essentials separate from the rest of the luggage when you are travelling. A great way to do this is with laundry bags. Ask for extra laundry bags even if you don't use the laundromat services. They are great for storing your infant's stuff, and are also pretty light so they are pretty easy to carry around.
Carry your tea
Hotel tea or coffee is often overpriced, and that is tough as some of us need coffee or tea almost constantly, especially if you plan to work or pull an all-nighter. Carry your own sachets or boxes of instant tea or coffee. Most hotel rooms have electric heaters for warming up water. You can use the sugar and milk powder packets you get on flights or buy them separately, and make your own cup of coffee and literally save a fortune
The extra key card
This trick comes in handy in humid climates. Ask for an extra key card at the reception. Use one card to lock your door, and use the other to keep the electricity on in your room. This way you can leave your phones charging, or your AC running, or your shoes to dry. In tropical areas especially, it's always a hassle when we have to wait for the room to cool down.
Ask for extra shower caps
Hotel always provide extra toiletries. Make sure you as for extra shower caps, as they will come very handy in packing away shoes. We often wrap our shoes up in newspaper, and they add a lot of weight to our luggage. Shower caps are lighter, and are perfect to pack our shoes.
