Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur
Climb to the roof a little ahead of the sunset to catch a good view. This place gets crowded! Don't be surprised if you have people cut past you to rush up to get a better view of the sunset. The wait is absolutely worth it!
There is also a cafe located on the roof of the fort that offers an less crowded option, plus some chai to go along with the views.
Skip the wax museum located within the property if you can.
Pushkar, Rajasthan
The camel fair is definitely worth experiencing at least once. Simply meander your way down the only street in Pushkar towards the Brahma temple, take a right to reach the open ground that leads you to the desert.
Though it's known for its camel fair - where camel herders sell, exchange and auction their camels, you can also see horses and bulls on sale.
I personally found it extremely crowded and overwhelming because you keep having to dodge camels, bulls and horses that are running towards you with no sign of stopping. The sunset however is totally worth the effort.
Avoid locals who begin conversations to sell you things. They can be quite persuasive. Also avoid the dance bars that are often set up like a friendly neighbourhood circus! Carry a scarf because it can get dusty.
Udaipur, Rajasthan
After exploring the stunning City Palace at Udaipur (the hefty camera fee is worth it!) make your way to the sunset boat ride to catch the golden hues embrace the palace from afar.
While the boat ride plies all day, it's best to catch the very last one to treat yourself to these gorgeous views!
While one boat drops you off at the Jagmandir Palace where you can grab a tea and watch the city palace from the distance, a connecting boat will take you back towards the city. Make sure you check about the timings so as to not get left behind!
Connecting boats are available one every ten minutes or so, so you can choose to catch the sunset from the palace that's afloat (choose the rooftop for the best view) or hop on to a boat to watch the sun shed its last ray over the waters that turn golden.
If you can't get enough of the vintage charm, make your way by foot to the Maharaja's vintage car collection housed at a museum a couple of kilometers away from the City Palace. You can even grab dinner there that's well worth the nominal cost.
The Thar Desert, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
Camp out in the desert amidst the sand dunes to get the best local experience. Desert Boys Dhani offers a great custom experience complete with camel rides, a home-cooked meal from scratch over firewood in the desert and jeep rides over the sand dunes. (Best to travel in a group to avoid being alone in the desert)
Watch the lovely moon during the night or amuse yourself as you attempt to count stars that lovingly look down at you as you lay down without a care in the world!
Avoid Sam San Dunes if you prefer to be away from the crowds and loud dance performances.
Jodhpur, Rajasthan
Undoubtedly the best way to catch the sunset is to fly over the Mehrangarh Fort, literally!
Even if you're afraid of heights, this lovely zipline organised by the very able Flying Fox will make you forget about your fears and catch the gleaming sun as it sets over the beautiful blue city below.
Avoid wearing shorts as it can lead to scratches from the zipline equipment.
All locations have lovely cafes situated at close quarters (except for the Thar Desert, naturally) So unwind after you've soaked in the last rays of the evening to take in the beauty that is Rajasthan - it'll make you feel like a princess!
The ten days I spent in Rajasthan gave me the opportunity to watch the sun set across some of the major locations in the beautiful state. Here's a list of places I recommend if you enjoy watching the setting sun as much as I do. It's guaranteed to be a different experience each time!
