Why “Orchard”?
To start off with, why exactly is this road called “Orchard Road”? Well, back in the early 19th century, this land was covered in plantations – from nutmeg to gambier and all sorts of fruits. So, the name “Orchard” naturally came to be associated with the place.
The Mansions of Orchard Road
If you take a quick stroll along Orchard Road, you’re sure to notice plenty of sprawling mansions on either side. Most of these were built in the mid-19th century and belonged to several distinguished individuals. One of these was King Chulangkorn who was the reigning King of Siam at the time.
The Cemeteries of Orchard Road
Another thing Orchard Road has in plenty are cemeteries – there are 3 in fact. There’s a Chinese graveyard, a Jewish one and a Sumatran one. Interestingly, this showcases the cultural diversity associated with Orchard Road.
