Ooty Tourism and Travel Guide

If you are planning a trip to the mountains, it’s understood that breathtaking sunsets, impromptu treks and star gazing are a few activities that can be included in your itinerary. This especially holds true if you are planning a trip to explore Ooty tourism as the hill station offers all this and much more. Located in the Western Ghat zone, Ooty is nestled at a height of 2,240 metres. It is the headquarters of the Nilgiri District and is the erstwhile summer headquarters of the East India Company. Udhagamandalam or Ooty was earlier home to the Toda tribe. While you’ll still see glimpses of this influence, the hill station has welcomed the ways of modern life in an effort to boost Ooty tourism. However, that shouldn’t deter you since there are tons of lesser-known gems in this beautiful hill station. Home to tea plantations, waterfalls, wavering hills and colonial architecture, there is a lot to admire as part of Ooty tourism. But, most importantly, it offers you the much-needed respite from city life. Despite a growing population of tourists, Ooty tourism has managed to protect and nurture the peaceful aura that the mountains offer. As is with tourism in most hill stations, Ooty tourism attracts a large number of honeymoon couples. The quiet of the mountains combined with the growing number of restaurants and resorts is an irresistible mix for couples. We recommend exploring the hill station on the adventurous Nilgiri Mountain Railways, or as it’s come to be known, the toy train. Boasting the steepest track in Asia, this will certainly be one of the most memorable train rides you embark on. Taking you through tea gardens, winding mountain tracks and lush valleys, the train ride is among the most popular activities to include in your Ooty tourism itinerary. While exploring Ooty tourism, we suggest keeping aside between three to five days. If you plan to include camping and trekking in your trip, then you can adjust the duration of your trip accordingly.

Best Time To Visit Ooty

Almost every season has its own charm in this quaint little hill town in the Nilgiris. However, the most popular time to explore Ooty tourism is from March to June. The average temperature during summers is around 25°C and though the days can be a little hot, mornings and evenings are pleasant. This is also the best time to travel if you want to include treks and visits to tree plantations in your Ooty tourism itinerary. The occasional rains during the summer months help bring the temperature down drastically.

On the other hand, the monsoon in Ooty is mesmerising. It may not be the most popular season but that just implies that budget travellers and solo backpackers can have a memorable trip. Wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers can expect lush scenery and reduced prices for hotels during the monsoon months of July, August and September.

Winter is popular among backpackers and budget travellers who want to explore Ooty tourism. Since the temperatures are low, most travellers prefer avoiding Ooty during the months of December to February. The mountains are covered in mist and trekking is almost impossible. Unless you are heading out to explore another side of Ooty tourism, we suggest not planning your trip during winter. However, if you happen to be in Ooty during January, you must attend the three-day Tea and Tourism Festival that is organised by the Tamil tourism department. You can taste different varieties of tea and learn more about local traditions.

If you are in the mood for a short trekking tour, we suggest heading up to Upper Bhavani Lake. A lesser-known tourist attraction, it’s the ideal spot to enjoy a quiet picnic amidst nature. If you would like to set up your own camp here, it’s best to take permission from the local authorities.
