From one of the world's highest lakes to breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas; from steep valleys covered with lush-green subtropical woodlands to rhododendron groves blooming with flowers; from the gorgeous mural-filled monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism to the pristine Hindu shrines of the ever-growing Nepali community - Sikkim is a land of richness and diversity.

And when you've already planned your trip to Sikkim, how can you even miss spending a couple of days in Gangtok - the gorgeous capital city offering the majestic views of Mt. Kanchenjunga - the third highest peak in the world?

How to reach Gangtok?

By air: The closest airport to Gangtok is Bagdogra, which is located at a distance of 125km or 5 hours away. Bagdogra is well connected with New Delhi and Kolkata, with numerous airlines like Indigo, GoAir, Spice Jet and Jet Airways servicing between the two. From the airport, you can easily hail a cab that will cost you about ₹2500- 3000, and take about 4hours.

The roads from Bagdogra to Gangtok: Needless to say, the moment you drive out of the airport vicinity, you'll be greeted by the lush green tea gardens on both sides of the road. Slowly, the topsy-turvy roads will run by the river, and you'd get to see the mountains.

A major part of the route runs alongside the River Teesta, and your eyes will be soothed by the gorgeous views.

By train: The closest railway station to Gangtok is New Jalpaiguri Railway station, Siliguri, located 148km away. It takes about 5-6 hours from the station to reach Gangtok; a cab here will cost you about ₹2700 - 4500.

Take a shared cab from NJP: You can also avail those shared cab run by Sikkim National Transport (SNT). The fare is INR 200-300 per person. There are also SNT organised bus services available to reach Gangtok from NJP. The rate is INR 90 per person.

By road: From Delhi NCR, take the Taj Express Highway to Agra – Lucknow Expy and NH27 to Araria – Jokihat Rd/Madanpur – Araria Rd/SH63 in Sisauna – Follow SH63 to NH327 in Chekarmari – Take NH27 and NH10 to Indira Bypass Rd/Ranka Rd – Gangtok.

From Kolkata, take NH19 (formally known as NH2) until you get to Bardhaman. From there, take the right on to NH114A towards Pakur and Farakka. The road will merge into NH34 after Farakka. Continue on NH34 via Malda, Raiganj and finally, Siliguri. The moment you cross Siliguri, Sikkim (and the hilly roads) will begin.
