Travelling to Odisha usually means visiting the sea beaches or the famous temples of Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar. Even the national parks of Odisha attract a number of wildlife enthusiasts. But did you know that Odisha also has a beautiful hill station, a place where the marvels of nature flourish in the form of hills, lakes, waterfalls and forests? Daringbadi, located at an altitude of 3000 feet is the only place in Odisha that is said to get snowfall in the extreme winter.

Daringbadi is located in the Kandhamal district of Odisha covered with pine forests and verdant green valleys that are kissed by clouds during the monsoons. It is said that the place first came to the notice of a British Officer named Dering. It is from his name, the place was called Deringbadi and then later came to be known as Daringbadi. It is said that during the British era, Daringbadi was used as a summer destination for the British.

Pine trees and coffee plantations

Daringbadi is a beautiful hill station. Not visited by many people, the lush greenery of the Odisha makes this place a nature’s paradise. You will see dense pine forest all around with a layer of mist caressing the treetops. The place is surrounded by the hills and you can see the panoramic view of the stunning vistas from the Hill Viewpoint. Daringbadi has coffee and spice plantations all the way upto the hill station. Towering pine trees and stretches of coffee plantations along with waterfalls and forests makes a heavy concoction tomake Daringbadi a desirable destination. Usually winter have a pleasant climate. Come winter, the temperature dips to below zero. No wonder the place has earned the sobriquet of “Kashmir of Odisha”.

Places to visit in Daringbadi

Visit the waterfalls

There are a lot of attractions in and around Daringbadi. Wherever you decide to visit, do not miss to visit the Madubanda and Badangia waterfalls. The clear water cascades down the rocky surface and it is a lovely view. The area is full of different types of trees and flowering plants. Stay there for some time and you will definitely feel a communion with the nature.

You can also visit the Putudi Waterfall located in Phulbani about 2 hours drive from Daringbadi.

Lover’s Point is not just any place where the young lovers meet away from the prying eyes of people. We actually felt that this place is all about the love story between man and nature. Serenity engulfs you once you are in this place. A small stream runs over the rocky terrain and the lush greenery surrounding the area makes the place simply magical. Belghar Sanctuary

You must visit this place if you love the forests. Full of picturesque mountains and stunning landscapes, the place is believed to be the homeland of Kutia Kandhas, whose lineage can be traced back to primitive days. If lucky, you might view a few wild animals and elephants as well here.

Apart from these places, you can also visit the coffee plantations, Spice garden, Doluri river and Rushikuliya River. You can go for short hikes in the surrounding hills. Nature is abundant at Daringbadi. So when you are there, forget everything and enjoy the pure nature while breathing in the unadulterated air.

How to reach

The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar. The distance between Bhubaneswar and Daringbadi is 250 km. From Bhubaneswar, it is easier to take a cab to reach Daringbadi.

The nearest railway station is Berhampur. The distance between Berhampur to Daringbadi is about 120 km. Hire a cab from Berhampur to reach Daringbadi. There are also a few public bus services from Berhampur to Daringbadi.

Best Time to visit

You can visit Daringbadi at any time of the year. The summer season will have a pleasant temperature while during the winters, the weather remains quite cold.
