Know as Agra of the south.

Located in one of the north Karnataka city Bijapur now called Vijaypur, The city of Victory.

Take the time to visit my city, And I will make sure that it is well worth your time.

As said you can explore the whole city In two days.

So Take A hat and water bottle with you and start exploring the historic city.

Before that take a look at where to visit and what to do.

Places must visit in the city.

There are around 10 places you should visit and They are almost on a single route if you start exploring from Shivgiri Shiva statue, near the city railway station.

Statue of lord shiva :

It is the Third highest Shiva statue next only to the one at Murdeshwar in Uttara Kannada.

The 85-foot tall statue is 3 KM on Ukkali Road from the city of Bijapur. A round temple is built underneath the huge statue estimating 1,500 tonnes.

Shri Siddeshwar temple :

Shri Shiddeshwar Temple is located in the city centre of Bijapur. And Makara Sankranti, a religious fair is conducted at the temple. And it one of the famous among the area.

Gol gumbaz :

Mausoleum of Mohammad Adil-Shah (1626–56).It is built on an elevated platform surrounded by a large garden. Its three other rivals, in size, are in Italy - two of them at Pantheon and St. Peters. The eastern entrance has been converted into a site gallery. It has four seven-storeyed corner pillars, each opening on to a unique "whispering gallery".

Ibrahim Roza :

Ibrahim Rauza also is known as Ali Rauza, built-in 1627. It was originally signified to be the tomb for the queen. It is a fine square structure with twin buildings. It was designed by the Persian artist, Malik Sandal.

The tomb on the left and a mosque on the right within it are set in a walled garden facing each other over an ornamental pond. The tomb as such is in a central chamber of 13 meters square and has a ceiling that is divided into nine squares with curved sides.

"It is said that this tomb inspired building the Taj Mahal at Agra"

It has impressive gateways. The doors are made of teak wood braced with metal strips and decorated.

. A unique acoustic feature of the mosque named is that standing next to the grave of the Sultan inside the tomb at one end, prayers can be heard at the other end.

Taj Bowdi :

Taj Bawdi is water storage that was built to commemorate Taj Sultana, Ibrahim II ’s first wife. The entrance arch is very impressive and has two octagonal towers; the east & west wings of the two towers were used as rest houses.

Asar Mahal :

Asar Mahal or a manor was constructed in 1646 by the Adil Shahis. It is located to the east of the castle. A bridge connects it and it is well preserved. It is also known as Dad Mahal since it was initially used as a hall of justice. It faces an artificial lake. The walls and ceiling of the hall display landscape paintings. Women are prohibited from entering this Mahal.

Jumma Masjid :

Jamia Masjid placed in the southeast part of the city, the largest mosque of Bijapur, was started in 1565, but not fully completed. It has an arcaded prayer hall with fine aisles supported on massive piers and has an impressive dome. The large lawn also has a water tank. It is called the Jami Masjid as Qutba is read here every Friday.

Bijapur fort :

Bijapur fort has plenty of historical monuments of architectural importance built during the rule of the Adil Shahi dynasty.

The citadel :

It is surrounded by big walls, a canal, it's gardens, palaces, and halls of the Adil Shahi period

Mehtar Mahal :

Placed beneath the Bijapur fort(1620) and it is the most graceful structure in the fort. build in an Indo-Saracenic style and the carvings are Hindu compositional style.

Gagan Mahal :

Gagan Mahal or Divine Palace was built by Ali Adil Shah I in 1561 as a royal palace with a durbar hall. It has three impressive arches and the central arch is the broadest. The durbar hall was located on the ground floor while the first floor was built as the private residence of the royal family.

sangeet mahal :

The Sangeet – Nari Mahal built at Navraspur, Bijapur is located 3 KM away from Bijapur town. It is one of the important structures typically representing the Adilshahi architecture in the area.

Almatti Park and Dam :

The place has a well built park and statue park near the reservoir. Spread across a large area.

probably one can choose to close the trip keeping the park on their list for their relaxing needs as the visit to the other historical places in the day trip.

Bara Kaman :

Barakaman (meaning 12 curves) is a mausoleum of Ali Roza built-in 1672. It is located to the north of the Gagan Mahal, amid a public garden. It was initially called as Ali Roza. It is a 215 feet square building built on a raised platform. It has now seven curves built of brown basaltic stone, in the Gothic style. The tomb is in an inner raised enclosure, which contains the graves of Ali, queens, and eleven other ladies.

Upli Burj :

Upli Buruj is a 16th-century, 24m-high observatory near the western walls of the city. An external flight of stairs leads to the top, where you’ll find two strong cannons and good views of other monuments around the city.

Malik e maidan :

The Malik-i-Maidan (Master of the Battlefield), also called Burj-E-Scherz, was constructed by Ibrahim Adil Shah II. It was titled after the Battle of Talikota of 1565 in which the Vijayanagara Empire was routed. The unusual feature of the gun is that its muzzle is shaped in the form of a lion head with carved open jaws as if gulping an elephant.

The gun is cool when touched even during the hot summer season and when tapped gives soft resonating sound. It is said that touching it brings good fate.

Things to do in the city.

There are some must-do things in the city.are,

Have a local food like, 'lingayat thali', vada pav, Girmit,

Jolad Rotti(an Indian bread) and many so at a reasonable price, You can try something unique.

Have a boat riding at Begum Talab.

Street shopping, like in other cities. now Bijapur has good food chains and shopping malls with reputed brands.

While in Vijaypur, buy for local handiworks. Take home some pieces of Lumbini jewels, crafted by the local tribes, sandalwood items, and the Ilkal Sari, exclusive to the area.

And if you want to see the real market and people of the city, then visit LBS( Shastri market), where the city's center lies.

If you do come to festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Devi pooja in Dasara you will find the city at its peak. everywhere the crowd, colors, Devi, and Ganapati arts on the streets in every corner of the city. that's worth watching.

It's a mostly hot, really hot climate which can seem good for foreigners. (mostly they prefer warm cities in general)If you are not be prepared for it.

Have an evening time at Gagan mahal, with a lake behind and with huge greenery around.

Shivagiri, just 4-5 KM from the gol-gumbaz. where you can have a good time watching, huge Shiva Murthy, and a beautiful garden.

Accommodations :

Most of the hotels and resorts offer to stay facilities as well however you will find fewer hostels to stay if you are a solo traveler. No problem, you can share your room with other tourists like you and bare prices.

Food :

you will easily get any kind of Indian food in the city except the seafood. a variety of different chutneys,raagi, Bisibele Baath, Dosa, Raagi Mudde, Idli.

And there are some restaurants you prefer to visit are, Savji hotels, shubashree hotel, Yediur lingeswar hotel( where you can have the local and authentic food) and Dhabas If you want non-veg foods in the budget. And for 3-star hotels, you have options like Golden heights, Madhuvan hotel, heritage hotel, Kamat hotel, town palace, Godavari hotel, and many.

Best time to visit :

The Month from October to February is recommended due to normal weather conditions. Here are the seasons in the city.

Bijapur in Summer (March - June)

The nearest airport is at Belgaum (205km) which can be reached by Auto-Rickshaws. and Goa international airport(257 km).

There are frequent bus services to Bijapur from most major cities and towns in India.

For local transport, Auto-Rickshaws are cheap and available almost around the city.
