This is a picture story of our stay in a log cabin in the Arctic woods in Lapland on the Finland - Norway border. We were there to chase the Northern lights and you can read about the entire trip experience and itinerary on my other post on Tripoto (link at the end of this post).
Our cabin was deep in the arctic woods with the nearest village of a 100 people an hours drive away.
The cabin is right on the river which serves as a fisherman's cabin in the summers and is vacant during the winters when the river freezes over
While going over to the cabin, we picked up a week's groceries and other supplies in Ivalo, a small village three hours away. We had to cook, clean and tend to ourselves during our 5 day stay here.
The mornings were filled with long walks exploring the surrounding wilderness and evenings were spent chasing the northern lights and then coming back to the tepee to enjoy some snacks on the grill and drinks.
The river at our doorstep had started to freeze over and we could walk a few yards on it. When it really freezes over in the winter you can use a sledge and glide straight to Norway.
The Finland Norway border is completely open and most times we weren't sure which country we were in while chasing the lights. Surprisingly though, the countries are an hour apart on timezone and sometimes our cell phones would pick up Norway's time even while in our cabin. So we calibrated our wrist watches to keep track of time.
The Arctic circle across Finnish Lapland and Norwich country is untouched, unspoiled and absolutely breathtaking. No pictures can capture its beauty and no words can describe the experience.
I have posted another travelogue on Tripoto with the details of the entire Northern Lights chasing experience and the trip.
