Day 1

Getting to witness the Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, is totally a matter of fortune. In the Midnight of 4th March, 2020 two young lady guides from Safartica Tours, Yolanda & Angie, drove us (me, my wife Swagata and my in-laws) through a snowy road for around 90 mins from Rovaniemi City centre to a quiet barren snowy land with woodland at the far end of the horizon where they arranged tents & campfire for us to observe Aurora. The sky was dark & the temperature was -20°C. Ya, it was freaking cold! The lowest temperature we all had ever faced during our entire lives. Initially on reaching there, we saw some green streaks of light pouring out from the sky. We clicked a few pics & came back to our tents & started enjoying the fire with sausages, grilled marshmallows & soul-saving Wildberry tea. At that very moment, someone from outside shouted "Hey, Its Aurora, Aurora" & we jumped out of our seats & ran to see that magnificent beauty hovering in the sky above us. As if someone in the distant horizon had started a colorful light show just to entertain us. There was an assemblage of different shades of green colour emanating from one end of the sky and spreading all the way to the landscaped vistas and dancing right in front of our very own eyes. Our bewildered eyes!! We were naturally thrilled to bits & couldn't take our eyes off that beauty. Not being accustomed to such extreme weather, it was really difficult for me to click the pictures in that chilling cold. But then, pictures of that magnificent beauty in front of us in exchange of a few frostbitten fingers seemed like a fair deal to me. Infact my in-laws, inspite of their age, braved the cold & were outside the tent nearly all the time. We were astonished to see the beauty of Aurora in that unbearable cold and then suddenly both of us realized "Oh my God, we are watching THE Northern Lights together". It was a dream come true moment for us. Our happiness knew no bounds & we just held our hands & kept on gazing at the sky. We lived a lifetime in that very moment.
