The new BF.7 variant has caused a bit of a stir around the world, but India is taking no chances. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is tightening its grip to make sure the country stays safe. No need to worry though - India's COVID numbers are lower than ever before, and have been steadily decreasing for months now. However, owing to the alert across the world, all international airports in India will randomly screen arriving passengers. So get ready for a bit of extra security the next time you fly!

COVID BF.7 in India:

The Omicron variant BA.5 has a sub-lineage known as BF.7, which is particularly contagious with a shorter incubation period and the ability to cause reinfection or infect those who have been vaccinated. The first instance of this strain in India was discovered in October by Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre, with two cases reported from Gujarat and one case from Odisha.

The most recent case of this variant was found in Vadodara after a person travelling from the United States tested positive for this variant.

Here’s everything we know so far:

-From Wednesday, 21 December all airports in India will start to perform random tests on incoming passengers for Covid-19.

-The Government of India has recommended the use of masks in public places, though it is not compulsory at this time.

-Singapore has taken extra precautions for those who come into contact with travellers by having the airport staff wear N95 masks and face shields. No other nation has implemented similar measures as yet.

Mansukh Mandaviya, India's Union Health Minister, held a meeting to analyse the current status of Covid-19 in the country. After the gathering, government representatives reported that airports must conduct random tests for coronavirus. In response to this situation, Mr Mandaviya stated that everyone should stay alert and prepared for any possible outcome. He also tweeted about his decision afterwards.

While it might seem that the world is heading to a dark place yet again, India is doing all it can to stay safe. With stringent measures in place, the country is doing its best to keep citizens safe from the Omicron variant BA.5 and its sub-lineage BF.7. But if you're planning to travel this holiday season, make sure you follow all the necessary precautions and keep yourself safe.
