A more contagious variant of the coronavirus, known as delta, is spreading in the United States and around the world, causing a surge of cases in some countries and prompting several nations to introduce new lockdowns.
Let us have a look at the real side of the story.
What is the Delta variant?
The Delta variant is one of several variants of concern identified by the World Health Organisation and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The variant could be 50% more contagious than the already faster-spreading Alpha variant of Covid, which emerged in Britain last year, health officials say.
As per the Studies, the vaccines for the Covid-19 are still largely effective against the Delta variant. But for the ones that are partially vaccinated needs to be protective and follow the safety measures.
According to the experiences of several countries, the Delta variant can spread rapidly through the unvaccinated population, including children.
Countries suffering from the Delta variant
As per the news reports, with the increasing cases of the Delta Variant, many countries have imposed restrictions to make sure the Delta Variant does less harm, and can be handled in a greater responsible manner.
In Australia, the variant’s outbreak has forced four major cities – Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and Darwin – into strict lockdown.
The Malaysian government on Monday Said nationwide stay-at-home orders would be extended indefinitely.
And Hong Kong authorities banned flights from Britain, where cases of the Delta variant, first identified in India, are rising rapidly.
In Bangladesh, soldiers prepare to patrol the streets to enforce stay-at-home orders, with new cases rapidly reaching their peak in early April.
Situation across countries
As the world is suffering from rough times since 2020, it is no unusual we all pray for a better 2022. But, the restrictions and lockdowns have been upsetting for financial and mental stability.
Although many countries avoided the worst of the pandemic spread last year. But now, people are frustrated by what is a pandemic regression of their countries. As we have countries like Singapore and Sweden which have moved towards normalcy.
What experts have to say?
As per the media, a professor of global biosecurity at the University of New South Wales in Sydney says “Anywhere you carry out vaccination, the disease will be pushed into the unvaccinated population”.
With the media statistics on the Delta variant, it was observed that the countries that have vaccinated relatively high percentages of their populations are moving ahead with reopening plans.
In Britain, where the Delta variant cases have more than doubled in the past two weeks. So the officials, as per the NYT reporters, say they still plan to lift most remaining pandemic restrictions on July 19. It is highly believed by the officials that the country remains well protected, with nearly half the population fully vaccinated.
The Delta variant is affecting India too
In India, where a devastating second wave this spring caused thousands of deaths daily, Maharashtra state has reimposed partial stay-at-home orders in response to the emergence of what has become known locally as “Delta Plus,” described by scientists as a sub-lineage of the Delta variant.
With the massive population of India, health officials have raised concerns that the variant can spread as fast in a country like India with only 5% of the population vaccinated of the 1.4 billion people.
As reported, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra reports that there is a possibility of the third wave in India.
So, to increase vaccine supplies, the country authorized the use of a fourth vaccine, Moderna.
Moderna announced Tuesday that its vaccine is effective against the delta variant. The results were based on blood samples from fully vaccinated people and showed that these individuals produced protective antibodies against several of the circulating variants, including delta.
Vaccination, our only hope?
The vaccines in use appear to offer good protection against the Delta variant, and most scientists agree that fully vaccinated individuals likely face little risk.
