I hope this "Local" refers to the bus not train. Because Chail is not connected by train.
If you are coming by train from Kalka and chail is the destination, better disembark at Kandaghat. Take a cab or bus from Kandaghat to Chail.
From Shimla- Buses for Chail are plying from Lakkar Bazaar Bus Stop. Cabs options is always available.

Is it possible to visit chopta by van during last week of december?

Buses and Taxis to Chopta and Ukhimath are easily available from Rishikesh. Chopta By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport of Chopta, situated 226 kms away in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand state. The remaining journey has to be covered ether in a taxi or in a bus.

Yes, but there's gonna be lot of snow on the roads from Duggal Bitta to Chopta. So drive safe.

Hi, It is possible to visit Chandrashila any time in the year except when it is snowing heavily. Although it generally snows from January to March, you can visit then too if the weather is not that bad. Go through others' itineraries on Tripoto to get an idea about travelling to Chandrashila when it's deeply covered with snow. Attaching some articles below! Have a great trip!

UpvoteCommentDec/Jan is the best time to visit India. You can visit Agra, Amritsar, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer. There are number of hikes you can do in Himachal Pradesh. Enjoy!

You can travel via hitchhiking and stay via couch surfing but I am not sure about free food.
UpvoteCommentThe best way to travel for free (or cheap) is to hitchhike, Couchsurf, and use Workaway. With Couchsurfing you usually exchange culture and maybe cook or give a gift to your host. So it is not entirely without money. But the gifts is not expected. Workaway is a great way to travel because you volunteer in exchange for food and accommodation, so usually you stay for more than a week. It also feels better and not like you're free-loading. You can also look at Petsitting or Housesitting. Another option is to take a tent and walk/hitchhike/cycle. You can wild camp and will only need to pay for food which can be very cheap in Asia and Africa. I've done all of the options and honestly, even though you don't need money to travel, it makes it easier. Sometimes there won't be someone to host you, or give you food. Or sometimes you need a break from people. It is very stressful to rely on other people the whole time. I recommend working and saving a little bit of money (just enough for food) and then starting your trip. Look up Alistair Humphreys. He walked through Spain with no money! You can try Tungnath and Chandrashila trek approx 14000m altitude with steep and dangerous walkway and 5-6km long trek.
And yeah it's in Uk , all the best
