Being from Tripura, I was never interested in visiting my own state, but after staying far away from my state for so many years, I got little excited to visit Unakoti, when I came back home.
And I finally went to Unakoti.
Here is a story of unakoti, how it got the name- according to hindu mithology its Shaiba (saivite) pilgrimage which takes back to 7th to 9th century.
It is said that when Lord shiva was on his way to Kashi with his 99,99,999 gods and goddesses following him. He made a night hault at this place, and told all his followers to wake up before sunrise, but none could wake up before sunrise except Lord Shiva Himself. He cursed all of them and turned them to stones, before he left for kashi alone. As a result we have one less than a crore stone images and carvings at Unakoti, which is where it got the name.
The place is green and refreshing, at the same time you have to climb stairs up and down to see the stone carvings.
You are also not allowed to carry any food items inside the heritage site.
How to reach Unakoti-
From Agartala, you have to take a train and reach Kumarghat Railway station, from there you can take a Hired car or a passengers car to reach Kailashahar. From kailashahar it takes about 40 minutes to reach Unakoti.
Unakoti is loctated in between two towns of North Tripura- Kailashahar and Dharmanagar.
From Dharmanagar it takes you around an Hour to reach Unakoti heritage site.
